GoPro teamed up with Group Y to bring a group of like-minded industry professionals for an evening of mixing, mingling and experiencing life around the GoPro San Diego office last Tuesday.
The sunset gathering of more than 250 people was hosted by Group Y and aimed to unite professionals from the action sports industry as well as those interested about learning more about GoPro to ignite ideas and, hopefully, facilitate a few business deals as well. This idea of bringing together passionate people from all facets of the industry is exactly what inspired Group Y in 2006 and is something GoPro supports 100 percent.
GoPro is a brand that has help shape storytelling, branding and marketing in a whole new way, explains Group Y co-founder Mark Sperling. We've been wanting to spotlight this brand at one of our events, as our members have asked us numerous times to feature GoPro.
The evening, which started off with cocktails and amazing Asian-inspired light bites from chef Lan Thai, had some exciting elements as well as educational. The former coming from a guest appearance by the Works with GoPro-certified company FoxTales and its GoPro-enabled photo booth. The innovative booth fit perfectly with the theme of the night - how working together can create magic - plus, it brought groups together to produce some epic stop-animation gifs.
Then, the main event gave a look into GoPro's inner workings via some GoPro employee anecdotes moderated by Mark, who was immediately inspired by the turnout.
I would say 2 key things stuck out, Mark recalls. The diversity of the audience, coming from as far as Los Angeles and even New York City and Portland. It was a cross section of different industries networking together under a common bond of connecting. The other highlight was the speakers, each showing the inner workings of this incredible brand that has transcended into a lifestyle brand.
The first two speakers were Vice President of Global Sports Entertainment Marketing Todd Ballard and Senior Global Director of Media Relations Rick. The pair talked GoPro all the way from the wrist-mounted film cam to 2016's recently released Omni VR rig and all-new GoPro Developer Program, which has over 100 companies working directly with GoPro on innovative products.
Todd also spoke to the importance of working with amazing athletes and empowering them to use GoPro through events like the GoPro Athlete Summit. Todd said events like the boot camp-style GoPro crash course intrigue athletes and keep them coming back for more GoPro antics.
To dive further into the juicy details of GoPro, Mark welcomed UX Designer Jill Iwasaki and Manager of Storytelling Products Joven Matias to the stage. The pair spoke about the passionate users they get to work with on the regular to craft new GoPro storytelling devices. They touched on the importance (and excitement) of testing user experiences, enabling improved edits with software in addition to the apps Splice and Replay. They even gave a sneak peek into a new stitching function that will surely revolutionize the sharing of a stitched action series.
Joven probably summed the evening up the best, Such an amazing group of passionate professionals who really connected with our story. Honored to be apart of it and to share a little bit of what we do.
