Top cameraman hit by train while filming

A well-known television cameraman has died after being hit by a train while filming in Soweto, the SABC reported on Tuesday. Dudley Saunders was a veteran SABC cameraman and also worked with the SABCs Special Assignment and M-Nets Carte Blanche programmes.

He was filming for the BBC at the time of his death.

According to the SABC, Saunders made headlines in 2011 after he was stoned by supporters of Julius Malema during a protest outside the ANCs Luthuli House headquarters.

Saunders was the son of veteran newsman Cliff Saunders, who was a political correspondent at the SABC until the late 1980s.

Tributes poured in from media personalities following the news of his death.

Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts described him as an absolute legend and one of the worlds best and most intrepid cameramen.

#dudleysaunders filmed the most volatile situations around world. But treated every shoot as new challenge. Will miss him beyond words, Watts tweeted.

Former colleague Chantal Rutter Dros tweeted she was deeply saddened to hear the news.

According to a tweet from Debora Patta, filming with Saunders was always more than just a story - it was an adventure, a work of art and a helluva lot of fun.

Journalist Mandy Wiener tweeted that Saunders was a legendary cameraman, a true professional and a helluva guy.

The BBCs Karen Allen tweeted that SA has lost a top camera pro and a real mensch. Gutted.
