-- Nine short films competing in the tvebiomovies 2014 competition will be screened later today at the Bamboo House in the Voices of the Climate Pavilion in Lima to delegates from around the world attending the UN Climate Change Conference. All the films can be watched on tve's YouTube channel
With ages ranging from 19 to 44, this year's tvebiomovies finalists hail from across the globe with entries from Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Colombia, Finland, India, Nepal, Spain, the USA and Zimbabwe. Their powerful one-minute films - sometimes provocative, sometimes touching, sometimes disturbing - embrace a wide spectrum of green challenges, from renewable energy and novel uses for bamboo to overconsumption and conserving the planet's natural life support systems that we all depend on. And the filmmakers use an equally wide range of techniques and styles to get their messages across from animation and music, to drama and satire.
With every view on YouTube notching up one vote, the winners will be the most watched films on tve's YouTube channel. The films which receive the highest number of YouTube views by 15 December 2014 will each receive a US$1,500 prize.
The screening in Lima is being organized by the International Network of Bamboo and Rattan, one of the category sponsors for this year's competition.
I applied to tvebiomovies because it was a good chance to test myself and - with the help of my film - to send a message about what is going to happen if we don't protect our planet, 29-year old Huseyn Qulamov emailed us from Azerbaijan of his film Greed'.
I made this film in order to show people that one person cannot save the planet and our environment alone, wrote 22-year old Brennan Carrithers from the USA, who made Be the Hero'. Saving the world is a goal that requires the help of each individual on Earth.
Winning this competition would mean that my message reached many individuals around the world and hopefully got them reflecting on simple ways to protect the environment for future generations, emailed Eric Ewoh Opu from Finland, about his film Save Some for the Children'. That, to me, would mean more than the cash prize.
Now in its fifth successful year, tvebiomovies 2014 invited aspiring and established film-makers to submit film proposals in four languages - French, Russian, Spanish, and English, to one of three individual categories Renewable Energy'; Bamboo and Rattan'; and A World With a Future'. Each of the nine short-listed finalists was awarded US$300 to make their films.
Notes to editors
tvebiomovies is in its fifth year. The competition was launched in June 2014 with films from three cult YouTubers - Ragenineteen (Bamboo tvebiomovies ) proektKOZA ( bioMOVIES 2014 (1500$) and matugarces (tvebiomovies 2014) on the tvebiomovies website: to date, their films have been 53,628 times. tvebiomovies 2014 received 225 entries from 61 countries.
tvebiomovies 2014 is supported by the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) for the INBAR Prize for Bamboo and Rattan; the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the Renewable Energy Prize (films in this category must come from the 63 EBRD member states); and WWF-UK for the category A World With a Future.
tve has been producing and coproducing films about the environment and development for 30 years, broadcasting to millions of viewers across the world and distributing films through DVD, internet and community screenings to hundreds of thousands more every year. Find out more at www.tve.org
