Years A Slave and American Hustle lead the Golden Globe nominees

12 Years A Slave and American Hustle will go into the 71st Golden Globe Awards as the hot favourites to beat in their respective categories of Drama and Comedy.

Olivia Wilde, Aziz Ansari, and Zoe Saldana announced the nominees in Los Angeles ahead of the upcoming 2014 broadcast, set to be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Steve McQueen's Oscar favourite 12 Years A Slave earned seven nominations, and will compete against Captain Phillips, Gravity, Philomena, and Rush for Best Motion Picture Drama.

David O. Russell's American Hustle goes up against Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, and The Wolf of Wall Street in the fight for Best Motion Picture Comedy.

McQueen and Russell compete with Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), and Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) in the Best Director category.

Lee Daniels' The Butler was shut out entirely, while other favourites such as Saving Mr. Banks and August: Osage County could only take solace in their lone acting nominations.

Such is the case in a year as stacked with great movies as 2013 is.
