kykNET & DSTV Family Talent Mentorship initiative aims to develop promising local talent and empower learners within the Western Cape

A school holiday arts mentorship programme is set to benefit 150 learners this week in the Western Cape by equipping them with first-hand training, exposure and empowerment in the arts community.

The kykNET and DSTV Family Talent Mentorship project, alongside local media company, The Domingo Effect, is partnering with the WCED Metropole South Education District for the first time to bring together 150 learners from various high schools in the Southern Metropole next week to unearth some of the district s hidden talents in the arts, music and entertainment field.

Learners, who show promising talent for a career in the acting, dance, music and writing disciplines, are transported to Strandfontein High daily this week, until Friday 6 October 2017, where they will be tested on their abilities while learning valuable insight from industry insiders.

Attendees are divided in to various groups throughout the programme and gain valuable insight from arts and entertainment heavy weights, including: Loukmaan Adams (drama), Frazer Barry (music), Lee Sophia Piedt (dance) and John Fredericks (writing).

The five-day event will also be attended by the likes of top SA actors Irshaad Ally and Gantane Kusch from Suidooster, as well as actor and TV presenter, Hannes Van Wyk from Kwela.

A talent showcase will be held on Friday 6 October, the final day of the programme, at Strandfontein High from 19h30 to 21h00, and tickets will be on sale at the door at R10 each, whereby all members of the public can support this initiative in the developing the future generation of artists and performers.

The three most promising young actors from this programme will each receive an acting screen test as well an appearance on the kykNET soapie, Suidooster. The most promising new musical and dance talent is set to perform at the Mitchells Plain Festival in December this year.

Shihaam Domingo, from The Domingo Effect, says this talent mentorship programme kicked off in April last year when a kykNET talent showcase at Standfontein High was launched by The Domingo Effect and kykNET to expand on the reach and visibility of the renowned theatre festival, Suidoosterfees, of which kykNET is a sponsor.

Sandy Schuter from the Strandfontein Community Police Forum (CPF) got in involved at our first event last year to stabilise the talent from the area along with logistics for the day. I conducted a 2-hour consultation with each of the performers who entered the talent showcase, to guide and connect them within the scope of what they required to move forward, she says.

Domingo, who is passionate about skills development and youth mentorship, says Karen Meiring from kykNET was blown away by the variety of entertainment talent on the day and is working together with the channel to make a difference in our communities.

It is important to empower children from our communities especially those who want to forge careers in the arts and entertainment arenas. We dont make any promises to expand and grow your career but we do try and guide the learners and connect in a way that enables entrants to take charge of their own future.
