Nomfundo is nominated for Boabab Award in UK

The Royal African Society's annual film festival, Film Africa, has nominated Nomfundo, a short film produced by Passion Seed Communications, for the Baobab Award for Best Short Film.

Celebrating the best African cinema from across the continent and diaspora, Film Africa is an annual festival that was launched in 2011 and is now the UK's largest festival of African film and culture. Running for its 7th year, Film Africa 2017 will take place over a period of 10 days from Friday the 27th of October until Sunday the 5th of November in venues across London.

Nomfundo' was shortlisted from over 100 films and will be screening in competition against other 7 films vying for the prestigious award. This will be the film's second screening in Europe, following the world premiere at the Helsinki African Film Festival in Finland, in April. The film then premiered in North America at the Black Star Film Festival in Philadelphia. Recently, it was also screened at the Africa On Screen Film Festival in Melbourne, Australia, the Silicon Valley African Film Festival in San Francisco, USA and right here at home at the Shnit Worldwide Film Festival in Cape Town and the Mzansi Women's Film Festival and Jozi Film Festival in Johannesburg.

Nomfundo' is a SiSwati film about a tormented and impulsive young woman who is pregnant with her first child. When the people she holds close to her heart betray her, she makes an erratic decision that unleashes a tragic chain of events. Dineo Lusenga plays the role of Nomfundo. Other cast members include Laki Koza, Thobile Kubeka, Onthatile Matshidiso and Ofentse Kharoli.

Independent filmmakers Dineo Lusenga and Sihle Hlophe collaborated to self-fund the film. The duo used a South African crowdfunding platform called Thundafund to raise additional funds. The National Film & Video Foundation came on board to assist with funding the post-production process. Lusenga is an actress, director, producer and radio DJ who has acted on TV shows such as Intersexions, Mutual Friends and Hard Copy while Hlophe is a writer/director whose work has been screened at film festivals on various continents. We are truly in awe of how well this film has done, it has taken a life of its own far beyond our imaginations and expectations. Being nominated for the Baobab Best Short Film Award is a huge honour, Sihle Hlophe and Dineo Lusenga.
