Hosted by local bush cook guru and presenter, Justin Bonello, and proudly sponsored by Pick n Pay, the Second Season of popular outdoor cooking competition, Ultimate Braai Master -The Roads Less Travelled , will launch on SABC 3 TV screens on Wednesday 18 September at 8.30pm.
Supported by Coca-Cola, Standard Bank, and Renault SA, and produced by leading SA production company Cooked in Africa Films, the 13-part Series features Executive Chefs and Judges Bertus Basson (Owner of Overture Restaurant) and Marthinus Ferreira (Owner of DW Eleven-13 Restaurant) as the top 15 braai teams (consisting of a Braai Master and Braai Buddy) travel and braai their way through 13 tough location-based challenges in a bid to win the 2013 title, R500 000.00 cash, a Renault Koleos 4 x 4 SUV valued at R340 000.00 and Front Runner vehicle accessories valued at R15 000.00.
Pantry partner, Pick n Pay, having sponsored the Series since its inception, has a long history of supporting and celebrating quintessentially South African pastimes, of which, braaing is a universal favourite. Says Pick n Pay's General Manager of Marketing Malcolm Mycroft, Ultimate Braai Master celebrates South Africa, not only as a country and tourist destination, but as a rich melting pot of cultures, flavours and culinary delights that reflect the values that the Pick n Pay brand is founded upon. The Competition allows us to showcase Pick n Pay's fresh, local, sustainable and Proudly South African product offering via the Ultimate Braai Master's Pantry, while demonstrating the brand's commitment to always being there for South Africans.
Filmed and supported by a 60-strong production crew including five camera teams, an Art Department and mobile Pick n Pay Pantry, Season Two's The Roads Less Travelled format is rougher, tougher, and saw contestants venturing further off-road as they were expected to camp, cook, and compete in some of the Series' most extreme challenges to date. The 60-day road trip encompassed some of South Africa's most pristine outdoor environments, including Jozini Dam in Northern Natal; Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga (declared a World Heritage Site for its birdlife); the mountainous vistas of Lesotho; the snow-capped mountains of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape; the rugged coastline of the Wild Coast; Tsitsikamma Forest's untamed beauty, and the Western Cape's wind-swept West Coast.
Says Series Presenter and Creative Director, Justin Bonello, While we pushed the contestants that much harder this year, raising the bar on Ultimate Braai cuisine, we also raised the production values of the Series resulting in a fast-paced action-packed Drama that is as much about the people and places as it is about the food. Everyone who took part in this year's Challenge should be commended, which is why I was especially thrilled to have Standard Bank supporting our top ten teams with cash Rewards.
2013's 15 competing teams were selected via a vigorous online entry and audition phase that resulted in the selection of 45 finalist teams shortlisted from a national pool of 400 semi-finalists.
The 2013 Ultimate Braai Master competitor teams include: -
1. Team Coal Play: a couple from Cape Town, Western Cape, Braai Master Kate George and Braai Buddy, Jonno Proudfoot.
2. Team West Coast Bro's: brothers from Lambert's Bay, Western Cape, Braai Master Etienne Gersbach and Braai Buddy Hein Gersbach.
3. Team Boerie Brothers: life partners of 16 years from McGregor, Western Cape, Braai Master Collin du Plessis and Braai Buddy Matt Bronkhorst.
4. Team Quince Cooks: married couple from Observatory, Western Cape, Braai Master Quenten Alberts and Braai Buddy Sandy Alberts.
5. Team Kasi Guys: nephews from Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, Gauteng, Braai Master Martin Sebelebele and Braai Buddy Ziza Masemola.
6. Team YingYang: an engaged couple from Pretoria, Gauteng, Braai Master Shaun Cavanagh and Braai Buddy Samantha van Niekerk.

12. Team Sumting Fresh: friends from Ennerdale, Gauteng, Braai Master Andrew Leeuw and Braai Buddy Nomthandazo Sithole.
13. Team The Braaight Brothers: brothers from Cape Town, Western Cape, Braai Master Tomas Cunnama and Braai Buddy Daniel Cunnama.
14. Team Smoke Sweat & Tears: friends from Fish Hoek, Western Cape, Braai Master Chris Kastern and Braai Buddy Simon Good.
15. Team Darkies Unleashed, Pick n Pay's Wild Card team and friends from Kathelong, Gauteng, Braai Master, Thabiso Motloung, and Braai Buddy, Motebejane Mofokeng.
