Last Broken Darkne gs into pre-production in Johannesburg

A new South African sci-fi feature film Last Broken Darkness has gone into pre-production in Johannesburg, South Africa. The post-apocalyptic action drama follows the story of Sam, one of the last surviving human beings left on Earth after a massive meteor shower peppers the northern hemisphere, leaving the surface a scarred and brutally dangerous place. Along with a small community of survivors, who have created a new world for themselves underground, Sam and his best friend Troy are suddenly faced with a new impending danger threatening to wipeout mankind's existence forever.

South African-born actor Sean Cameron Michael is attached to play the lead role of Sam. International audiences first met Michael in Dean Devlin's Emmy-winning mini-series The Triangle and as UN worker, Charles Solenz, in Fox's multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominated feature 24: Redemption (opposite Jon Voight and Kiefer Sutherland). With over 80 TV and film credits to his name, the busy actor recently starred opposite Games of Thrones' Charles Dance in Strike Back, as well as alongside Oscar winner William Hurt in BBC Films' The Challenger Disaster. He also played a support lead in the Danish western The Salvation for director Kristian Levring, with Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green. This year Michael played a recurring role in the Michael Bay produced pirate adventure Black Sails on STARZ, garnering 4 Emmy nominations and 2 wins. As a 2014 Emmy nomination contender for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Richard Guthrie, Michael returns in season 2, which premieres January 24th 2015 in the US.

Much loved local actor Brandon Auret will play the support lead role of Troy. Recently seen in Elysium opposite Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, Auret gained high praise for his stellar performance in the award-winning indie feature Durban Poison. The popular actor will next be seen in Neil Blomkamp's highly anticipated feature film Chappie (opposite Sharlto Copley, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver), as well as Tiger House for director Thomas Daley. Auret's other credits include District 9 and Catch a Fire with Tim Robbins.

South African theatre actress and model Suraya Santos will make her feature film debut playing the role of Rose, a young girl on the run and taken under the wing of Sam as she holds the key to the future of civilisation on Earth.

Director Christopher-Lee Dos Santos and his company DS Films have partnered with Diony Kempen and Deon Meyer from The Karoo Film Company to bring this feature to international audiences. Their previous collaboration was on Dos Santos' first full-length feature film, Angel of the Skies, about South African Air Force pilots shot down during World War II. The movie released in over 25 territories, including the UK, USA, Europe and Australia.

The Karoo Film Company recently acquired the film rights to Jacques Steenkamp's The Griekwastad Murders: The Crime that shook South Africa, while their previous productions include Die Laaste Tango, Die Ballade van Robbie de Wee and Alles Wat Mal Is.
