Crime film Zulu to close Cannes fest

The crime film Zulu, starring Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom, has been selected to close the 66th Cannes Film Festival on 26 May.

The film, which has been described as part crime noire and part social study, follows the lives of two cops who are called to investigate the gruesome murder of a national rugby hero's daughter.

Post-apartheid Cape Town is the setting for the film and it quickly becomes clear that the ghosts of apartheid still loom. It looks at the lives of South African's and highlights the complexities of post-apartheid society.

Bloom plays the part of Brian Epskeen, a white police officer whose family has been long entrenched in the apartheid system. Epskeen joins forces with Ali Sokhela (played by Whitaker) to fight against the evil gripping the city.

In an interview with Die Burger Bloom said that the opportunity to do the film was interesting very different to anything I have ever done before.' He also said that he was excited to be in South Africa and that the three month filming stint was his first visit.

The French writer Caryl F rey's novel of the same name is the basis of the film; it was adapted and directed by J r me Salle. The filming was all done on site in South Africa; Salle called the experience a great adventure'.

Zulu was produced by Richard Grandpierre of Eskawd, a Paris based production house. It was co-produced by Path , Lobster Tree and M6 Films and the score was done by the Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat.

Baz Luhrmann's adaption of The Great Gatsby will open the festival, which will run from 15 to 26 May.
