Chapman University introduces personal safety app

Paul Seydor, professor at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, recently published The Authentic Death and Contentious Afterlife of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid: The Untold Story of Peckinpah's Last Western Film, a book about director Sam Peckinpah with Northwestern University Press.

NEW APP DEBUTS FOR CAMPUS SAFETY

The Chapman University Department of Public Safety has introduced the Rave Panther Guardian app that can turn a smartphone into a personal safety device.

The Rave Panther Guardian lets students and others communicate quickly with campus public safety or trusted family members and friends.

It allows the user to set a safety timer and request that trusted friends or family members check in at a specific time if the user is headed to an unfamiliar place or walking to the car late at night.

The app can make an emergency call to Public Safety, as well as send texts and photos if the user sees something suspicious.

Users can also create a Smart911 Safety Profile with specific information about medical conditions.

The app is free to anyone with a current chapman.edu or mail.chapman.edu email. Profile data are stored securely and cannot be used to track the user's location unless a 911 call is made or a safety timer expires.

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

As part of the Chapman University event Interstices: The In-betweeness of Ethics, more than 20 students ages 14 to 17 from the Orange High School Literacies Partnership on Feb. 26 attended a question-and-answer session with Pico Iyer and Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Patrick Fuery.

Wilkinson College invited the students from the program to submit questions for Iyer to answer and sit in on a Panther Production taping showcasing Iyer and Fuery discussing and answering the questions.

Iyer is a British-born essayist of Indian origin who has traveled the globe and explores the idea of a global soul, something that comes from cultures converging and combining.

PROFESSOR PUBLISHES ON DIRECTOR

Paul Seydor, professor at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, recently published The Authentic Death and Contentious Afterlife of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid: The Untold Story of Peckinpah's Last Western Film, a book about director Sam Peckinpah with Northwestern University Press.

The film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid was reworked multiple times from its filming, to preview release, wide release, video release and DVD releases. Issues that Peckinpah faced professionally and personally conflicted with each other over the course of creating the film.
