Amazon Web Services Announces M4 Instances for Amazon EC2
New General Purpose instances feature the latest Intel processors, larger sizes, Enhanced Networking, and dedicated EBS bandwidth for high performance at an affordable price
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun. 11, 2015-- Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ:AMZN), today announced M4 instances, the next generation of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) General Purpose instances. M4 instances deliver significant processing power with custom 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon E5-2676 v3 Haswell processors, offer dedicated bandwidth to Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), and provide Enhanced Networking for higher packet per second (PPS) performance, lower network jitter, and lower network latencies. M4 with Enhanced Networking delivers up to 4 times the packet rate of instances without Enhanced Networking, while ensuring consistent latency, even when under high network IO. Within Placement Groups, Enhanced Networking reduces average latencies between instances by 50 percent or more. M4 instances are well-suited for a wide variety of applications including relational and in-memory databases, gaming servers, caching fleets, batch processing, and business applications like SAP and Microsoft SharePoint. Our business relies on a service oriented architecture that leverages hundreds of Amazon EC2 instances in a Mesos cluster to abstract CPU, memory, storage, and other compute resources, said Whitney Sorenson, Vice President of Platform Infrastructure at HubSpot. M4 instances offer an optimal balance of compute and memory for our cluster, and the m4.10xlarge, with 40 vCPUs and 160 GiB of memory, will allow us to significantly reduce our cluster size while driving down costs through better hardware utilization.
ProQuest powers research in academic, corporate, government, public and school libraries around the world with unique content including rich academic databases, and technologies that connect people with information. Last year, we moved our first service, the Summon Service for library searches, to the AWS Cloud, said Rich Belanger, Chief Information Officer, ProQuest. When running our SOLR workload to optimize search, we found that we could benefit from an instance that has a memory footprint right between what is offered on compute optimized and memory optimized instances so that we can fully utilize both resources. With the new m4.4xlarge, we will be able to able to better optimize our resource usage to decrease our costs.
Customers can launch M4 instances using the AWS Management Console, AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), AWS SDKs, and third-party libraries. M4 is available in five different instance sizes ranging from 2 virtual CPUs (vCPUs) with 8 GB of memory (m4.large) to 40 vCPUs and 160 GB of memory (m4.10xlarge), and are available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), US West (Northern California), EU (Ireland), EU West (Germany), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), and Asia Pacific (Sydney) regions.
