National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Mourns the Passing of Veteran Actress Mme Connie Chiume

Johannesburg, 8 August 2024 - It is with profound sadness that the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), mourns the passing of the esteemed and multi-award-winning veteran actress, Mme Connie Chiume. Mme Connie, a luminary in the South African film and television industry, passed away at the age of 72 on 6 August 2024.

Mme Connie Chiume's illustrious career spanned over 46 years, during which she left an indelible mark on the hearts of audiences both locally and internationally. She was known for her film roles in Black Panther, Black Is King, and Blessers. On television, she appeared in Yizo Yizo 2, Zone 14, Rhythm City, and Gomora. Her talent, dedication, and passion for the arts earned her numerous accolades, including three prestigious South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs). In 2009, she was awarded Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series, followed by Best Supporting Actress in a TV Soap in 2010. In 2022, she was honoured with the Lifetime Achiever Award, a testament to her exceptional contribution to the industry.

Mme Connie's influence extended beyond the borders of South Africa. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Black River Film Festival in Jamaica, which took place from 26 to 30 June 2024. This award aims to honour individuals who have made exceptional and sustained contributions of artistic significance in the field of performing arts and films. Regrettably, due to her health, she was unable to attend the ceremony. The Black River Film Festival acknowledged her impactful journey, stating, Your impactful journey and contributions over the past 46 years in the international film arena have truly stood out, and we believe your work exemplifies the essence of this distinguished award.

Mme Connie Chiume's legacy is characterised by her extraordinary talent, resilience, and the ability to connect deeply with her audience. She has inspired generations of actors and filmmakers, leaving an enduring legacy that will continue to influence the industry for years to come.

The NFVF extends its deepest condolences to Mme Connie Chiume's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Her remarkable contributions to the arts and her spirit will forever remain a part of South Africa's cultural heritage. We thank her for being a patriot who carried the South African flag to the world.
