More than Survivors' is a community collaborative project between the East Los Angeles Women's Center and JOVRNALISM, a hackathon-style course created by USC Annenberg Professor Robert Hernandez. In this project, students at JOVRNALISM worked alongside survivors of domestic abuse to tell their stories through 360 VR videos that have been

post-produced with the industry's favorite optical flow stitching and stabilization solution Mistika VR.

The immersive pieces were produced during the peak of the pandemic introducing many unexpected challenges for the JOVRNALISM students. One of them was to send the 360 cameras to the victims and teach them remotely how to use this technology.

Training non-tech people to handle a 360 camera via Zoom or even building a strong bond of trust between the team and participants was quite a challenge - but the fact that these women shared their lives and past trauma through an intimate immersive story reinforces the power of this medium, shared Robert Hernandez, Professor of Professional Practice at USC.

-- Post-production workflow across the globe

Managing the post-production process was not an easy task for Robert Hernandez, especially as some of the students were located in Los Angeles and others in China. We had to juggle the unstitched, RAW files from the camera. Mistika VR stitched the video seamlessly allowing us to convert those scenes into a powerful, immersive piece.

He also highlighted that Mistika VR made the whole process more fluent and helped them to achieve perfect results. We couldn't do this project without Mistika VR. The cameras we shipped to the students and participants across the country weren't the best, but the software greatly improved the final look and elevated the quality of the production in a very considerable way.

-- Using VR technology to tell powerful stories

Deciding to create this project with VR technology seemed the right choice. We work in the immersive space and feel that this technology helps connect viewers to these human stories in ways traditional media can not. While many people think of VR and the Metaverse as these high-end tech spaces, we want to use them to include all voices and perspectives, especially those who are overlooked or misrepresented. Immersive is for everyone, concluded Robert Hernandez.

More than Survivors es un proyecto fruto de una colaboraci n entre East Los Angeles Women's Center y JOVRNALISM, un curso de estilo hackathon creado por el profesor Robert Hern ndez de USC. Las piezas inmersivas se produjeron durante el pico m s alto de la pandemia, lo que supuso grandes retos para los estudiantes de JOVRNALISM. Uno de ellos era enviar las c maras 360 a las v ctimas y ense arles a usarlas por videollamada. Ense ar por Zoom a personas sin conocimientos t cnicos a usar una c mara 360 o incluso establecer un v nculo con ellos para que confiaran en el equipo ha sido un gran desaf o. Pero el hecho de que estas mujeres compartieran su vida y sus traumas pasados a trav s de una historia inmersiva y tan ntima, refuerza el poder de este medio , comparti Robert Hern ndez, profesor de Pr cticas Profesionales en la USC.

Flujo de trabajo de post-producci n entre continentes

Manejar el proceso de post-producci n no ha sido una tarea f cil para Robert Hern ndez, sobre todo porque algunos alumnos estaban en Los ngeles y otros en China. Tuvimos que hacer algunos malabarismos con los archivos RAW no estitcheados de la c mara. Mistika VR hizo el stitching del v deo a la perfecci n, permiti ndonos convertir esas escenas en una pieza inmersiva y potente.

Tambi n ha insistido en que Mistika VR ha hecho el flujo de trabajo mucho m s ligero y ha ayudado a alcanzar unos resultados perfectos. No podr amos haber hecho este proyecto sin Mistika VR. Las c maras que se enviaron a los estudiantes y a los participantes no eran las mejores, pero el software realmente mejor el aspecto final y la calidad de la producci n.

Usar la tecnolog a VR para contar historias poderosas

Elegir la realidad virtual para crear este proyecto ha sido una decisi n acertada. Trabajamos en el espacio inmersivo y sentimos que esta tecnolog a ayuda a los espectadores a conectar con historias reales. Mientras mucha gente piensa que el VR y el Metaverso' son espacios de alta tecnolog a, nosotros queremos usarlos para dar a conocer todas las voces y perspectivas, especialmente aquellas que son pasadas por alto o tergiversadas. El mundo inmersivo est hecho para todos , concluye Robert Hern ndez.
