DTG Summit. London May 2015
This annual event also celebrated the 20 year anniversary of the DTG and was chaired by Media Commentator Steve Hewlett. This event attracted more than 300 delegates. The DTG focusses primarily on broadcasting and content delivery and has documented many of the UK delivery formats for broadcasters. Steve Unger from Ofcom introduced some of their research in to viewing habits. Interestingly their research indicates that the younger generation value mobile phones above TV receivers in addition to the usual viewing habit differences between generations. Terrestrial broadcasting is favoured by traditional viewers with the Internet and mobile data favoured by younger generations.
A presentation from a representative of the supermarket chain Asda made a plea for simplicity. Already the array of bewildering logos for UHD is causing market confusion and as the various additional features such as higher frame rates, increased colour space and higher dynamic range are release the potential for confusion grows.
Ilse Howling, Managing Director, Connected TV Digital UK introduced Freeview Play which promises increased interactivity and compatibility with the European HbbTV 2.0.
AS the industry moves to new services and formats the DTG provide Plugfests as reported by Simon Gauntlett to ensure the services are robust and interoperable.
The day closed with a series of awards to celebrate the DTG's 20th anniversary: with
The Innovation Award, given to Sky s Now TV for their over-the-top on demand TV via micro set-top boxes and apps.
The Collaboration Award, given to BBC Digital for their continued collaborative efforts both in the UK and worldwide.
The Partnership Award, awarded to DVB for bringing together an industry in its early stages and pioneering a global standard worldwide.
The original founders of the DTG were each honoured with the Founders Award recognising their instrumental role in the formation of the Digital TV Group in 1995 as a pioneering force in the digital switchover in the UK.
