Hooligan, a creative post-production boutique that specializes in artistic offline editing and visual effects, is pleased to announce the addition of Senior Visual Effects Flame Artist Paul Marangos. With 20+ years of post-production experience, Marangos notably spent eight years at VFX, design & animation powerhouse The Mill. He has already wrapped up several projects with Hooligan, including commercials for CITI and Match.com, and Indranis short film Crescendo, curated by Pepsi in conjunction with the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Ive always enjoyed working with editors, and Hooligan provides me the opportunity to step out of traditional facilities and work directly with them in order to continue doing what I do best, remarks Marangos.
Paul always seems to be way ahead of me, adds Kane Platt, president / senior editor, Hooligan. He always knows what Im working on and what the creative challenges are, and will call me into to his room to look at wonderful visual ideas before Ive even started cutting. Its an enthusiasm that one rarely finds - and it usually leads to great things. Needless to say, we are excited that Paul is here.
VFX supervision, editing, conforming, finishing and compositing all reside harmoniously in Marangos wheelhouse. Through the years, he has gracefully navigated the dynamic post industry by the guiding philosophy that problems become challenges, which in turn become solutions. Hooligan EP Sue Wladar says he is one of the best problem-solvers shes ever worked with, likening his creative process to pointillism. We see the sequence as one full image, but Paul works within the smaller dots of the composition, perfecting as much as he can while creating something beautiful, explains Wladar.
Collaborating with top directors representing the world's largest markets, Marangos has contributed to countless commercials for global brands, such as Nike, BMW, Taco Bell, Lexus, Honda, Guinness, Cadburys, Samsung and Pepsi. His advertising reel is highlighted by Nando's Cannes Lion-honored Dictator campaign and FNB's 2010 World Cup ad in which he seamlessly composited a full stadium using only 150 people.
In the entertainment sector, Marangos has furnished his talents on graphics packages for major networks and TV shows, including the Monitor Award-winning Sucker TV, not to mention the 2001 feature film Hannibal, among other blockbusters.
His special effects wizardry on music videos includes cinematic productions for Oasis ( Right Here, Right Now ) and Mariah Carey (My All) - an experience he would later come to call a master class in the art of beauty retouching in collaboration with director Herb Ritts - as well as Bj rk, Madonna, Goldfrapp, Kyle Minogue, Radiohead and Elton John.
Born in South Africa, Marangos career took off shortly after graduating from design school in Johannesburg. Learning the principles of TV and video graphics, his first gig at The Video Lab culminated with the intercontinental telecast of The Rolling Stones' Voodoo Lounge concert in Johannesburg.
Positions at cell, the legendary London-based visual effects boutique, and The Finish Line in LA preceded Marangos prolific tenure at The Mill; becoming more involved with on-set VFX supervision, he ascended into a transatlantic role with the company, garnering special mentions from D&AD, CAD and many others along the way. Continuing his international trajectory, Marangos returned home to Johannesburg for a senior position at post house Blade, followed by a stint at Scarlett in New York before joining Hooligan.
The caliber of editorial talent and leadership at Hooligan is unmatched, concludes Marangos.
