AFDA presents annual Film and TV Showcase

AFDA, the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, presents its annual Film and TV Showcase end November at the V&A Waterfront.

The annual showcase of graduate student short films and tele-novella productions will be presented on 23 and 24 November at the V&A Waterfront Ster Kinekor in Cape Town. The festival opens with a welcome by AFDA Chairman and Co-founder Garth Holmes and culminates in a black tie event where industry professionals will be presenting the awards to the top graduates.

The AFDA showcase is a unique opportunity for AFDA graduate students to exhibit their work to their intended audience and experience a visceral response from the audience - whether they laugh, cry or are shocked, the audience response is critical for student film makers to understand the key principles of identifying and connecting emotionally with an audience, says Garth Holmes.

The festival presents a total of 46 new titles that include 3rd and 4th year titles from both the Cape Town and Johannesburg campus as well as the award winning master's students documentary Crumbs . The festival includes the live broadcast of 3rd year graduate tele-novellas to a potentially vast Cape Town TV audience. Megan Rusi, head of TV School, confirmed that its a culmination of the efforts to recognize television as part of the new age storytelling arsenal and as a medium that is having an impact on the multi-media environment. A number of industry players will view our undergraduate and postgraduate graduation projects at the Television Festival, she added. The live television broadcast will take place at the AFDA campus in Observatory on 18 November at 18h30 and 19h00 on Cape Community TV - DSTV channel 263. Arrival time is 17h00 for 18h00 and the live event kicks off at 18h30. Tickets are R15 at the door on a first come first served basis.

The TV and Film Festival also offers AFDA actors an opportunity to showcase their talents, allowing them the opportunity to experience and measure potential impact that they as actors are capable of delivering to an audience, as Dr Christopher John, Head of the Performance School, explained.

This year's Critics panel includes film makers Revel Fox, Peter Goldsmid, Malcolm Kohll, Dave Barkham, Roy Zetisky, Kyle Lewis and Jozua Malherbe.
