EXPO TO HIGHLIGHT EDUCATIONAL VALUE OF HAM RADIO FOR CABLE ENGINEERS

Sept. 22-25 event to show link to RF, wireless expertise

JULY 30, 2014 (Exton, PA) The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) today announced that it will underscore ham radio's role as an educational building block for cable engineering and operations professionals when SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2014 takes place Monday through Thursday, Sept. 22-25 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

Using a ham radio base station in SCTE Central, a dedicated frequency for member-to-member ham radio communications and other new and perennial show features, SCTE will highlight how increased knowledge of ham radio operations can open the door to greater understanding of RF and wireless technologies. SCTE Cable-Tec Expo will explore RF and wireless in depth at the Wireless and DOCSIS 3.1 Symposium on Monday, Sept. 22, as well as at a variety of workshop sessions.

"Historically, the direct link between ham radio and core cable knowledge has contributed to the career growth of many cable engineers," said SCTE Hall of Fame member Ron Hranac, Technical Leader for Cisco and coordinator of SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 's ham radio activities. "With the industry's increased emphasis on wireless communication technologies, the technical fundamentals learned by licensed ham radio operators are becoming more valuable than ever."

Ham radio activities at Expo will include:

The SCTE ham radio station, W3HFC, operating on the 2 meter band out of the SCTE Central exhibit, the gateway to the show floor;

Portable operation by show attendees on 146.58 MHz FM simplex;

An interactive display for posting the QSL cards that are confirmations of two-way contact; and

The annual Ham Radio/RF Communications Group Reception on Thursday, Sept. 25, from 6-8 p.m.

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo once again promises to be the leading venue for helping the cable telecommunications industry and its workforce to reduce costs, deploy new services and increase customer satisfaction. This year's event will feature keynote insights from two of the industry's most notable executives: Rob Lloyd, president, development and sales for Cisco Systems, Inc., and Mike Fries, president and CEO of Liberty Global.
