For those of you just now tuning in, gTLD stands for generic top-level domain, which is the suffix placed at the end of non-specific domain names (e.g., .com ). ICANN, the global non-profit organization that governs the internet, initiated a process in 2011 that will allow for a vast expansion of the 22 existing gTLDs, granting newfound flexibility for the creation of additional suffixes, or strings. With this expansion, strings may now consist of nouns ( .book ), verbs ( .drive ), brands ( .apple ) and even expressions ( .wow ). Understandably, the prospect of this development has initiated an unprecedented internet land grab, prompting established organizations and entrepreneurs alike to take interest.

At present, 1,849 applications have been submitted for the new strings, which ICANN is currently reviewing, and will award respective registries through the forthcoming delegation. One critical requirement in the new gTLD application process is the selection of an escrow agent to act as a trusted third party in protecting registry data.
