Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) to be Explored at Cine Gear

ACES, the new Academy Color Encoding System, will be explored by a panel of experts at Cine Gear at the Sherry Lansing Theater at Paramount Studios in Hollywood on June 6 from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Titled ACES for Hands-on Filmmakers, the panel is presented by the International Cinematographers Guild (ICG, IATSE Local 600) and the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Technology Committee, in cooperation with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

ACES 1.0, the first production-ready release of the system, enables DPs and directors to better preserve the look of their creative intent from on-set monitoring and look management through dailies, editorial, VFX, DI and on into archiving. It does this, in large part, by addressing long-standing color management issues facing todays productions.

Filmmakers and technologists will discuss how ACES was developed, why it is important and how it impacts the creative and practical production process. ACES can help streamline workflows and solve color reproduction issues on a wide range of displays. It will also help facilitate more effective and efficient integration of footage from multiple camera models and lenses along with CGI by providing a single color management standard.

Panelists include:

Curtis Clark, ASC, director of photography, chairman of the ASC Technology Committee, recipient of the 2013 ASC Presidents Award and 2014 AMPAS Scientific and Technical Achievement Award

John Daro, digital intermediate colorist for Fotokem and Deliverance Creek

Ray Feeney, ACES project committee co-chair, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Bobby Maruvada, digital imaging technician and colorist

Theo van de Sande, ASC director of photography and 2014 ASC Award nominee (Deliverance Creek)

Mark Weingartner, VFX director of photography, chair of the ICG National Training Committee and member of the ASC Technology Committee, will serve as moderator.

Andy Maltz, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Managing Director, Science and Technology Council, and the panelists will be available for press interviews after the event.
