The European soccer scene heats up this weekend as the Premier League opens its season in the UK and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup pits DFB Cup holders VfB Stuttgart and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in Germany.
The Deutsche Fu ball Liga (DFL) has remained committed over recent years to investing in innovation for broadcast and the live match viewing experience. A year ago, the Supercup grabbed headlines when it achieved a claimed world-first of a system delivering a VR live stream of the match from pitchside in stunning 10K resolution.
In this exclusive conversation, the DFL's VP of Product Management & Innovation Dominik Scholler and Head of Product Innovation Jan Deckenbrock explain how and why they did it, what they have learned from the projects, how a 360-degree production dovetails with a traditional broadcast workflow, and what could potentially happen next with this type of technology and viewing experience.
