AFRICACOM 2012 Exhibitor Preview
WORK Microwave - Booth B25
To support a growing customer base in Africa, WORK Microwave will exhibit for the first time in the Southern Africa region at AfricaCom 2012. Bringing more than 25 years of global expertise designing satellite communications technologies for telecommunications companies, broadcasters, integrators, and government organizations, WORK Microwave will showcase a wide range of technology advancements at the show.
Visitors to the WORK Microwave stand can view the companys modem portfolio, which includes a live demonstration of its leading IP-Modem SK-IP with its in-built OptiACM technology and an introduction to WORK Microwaves new DVB-S2 Modem SK-DV combined data and video modem. In addition, the company will showcase enhancements to its next-generation indoor and outdoor frequency converter series.
Key Products and Technology Demos
Modem Portfolio
New DVB-S2 Modem SK-DV Combined Data and Video Modem
At AfricaCom 2012, WORK Microwave will display its innovative new data and video modem designed to streamline an operators signal transmission setup. Utilizing DaVid technology, the DVB-S2 Modem SK-DV simultaneously transports both data (network connection) and live broadcast (video content) over a single satellite carrier, aggregating multiple MPEG transport streams and IP data into a unified DVB-S2 multistream.
Ideal for broadcasters, telcos, and satellite operators relying on a hybrid infrastructure that requires TS and IP interfaces, the DVB-S2 Modem SK-DV includes a powerful set of features, including Generic Stream Encapsulation, OptiACM, advanced modulation types up to 32APSK, and traffic shaping that maximize data throughput and bandwidth use while reducing operational and capital expenditures.
DVB-S2 IP-Modem SK-IP Test Bench
A live demonstration of the DVB-S2 IP-Modem SK-IP will help attendees learn more about the 16-channel ACM functionality (OptiACM) of the IP-Modem. The interactive test setup will demonstrate how the IP-Modem compensates for disturbances in the satellite link - due to physical conditions such as humidity and atmospheric precipitation - through real-time adaptation of transmission parameters according to link conditions. The demonstration will include two screens, enabling attendees to observe simulated conditions such as noise, data rate, and type of modulation and to witness the flipping over of the constellation diagram.
New Cross-Layer Communication Technology
At AfricaCom 2012, WORK Microwave will highlight its recent partnership announcement with XipLink, a leading developer of wireless bandwidth optimization products. The first phase of the partnership will integrate WORK Microwaves DVB-S2 IP-Modem ACM functionality (OptiACM) with XipLinks traffic shaping QoS/TCP function into one environment. The integrated solution enables WORK Microwave to effectively eliminate the issues associated with traditional bandwidth allocation and introduce new configuration parameters and options that were not possible before. As a result, end-users can efficiently manage traffic policies and optimize bandwidth usage.
New 5-Percent Roll-Off Feature
Utilizing WORK Microwaves innovative new roll-off feature, operators can achieve up to a 15-percent bandwidth gain on top of the DVB-S2 standard, after increasing the power of their modem or modulator in order to compensate for the wider carrier. Alternatively, operators that are unable to increase the power of their modem or modulator can still achieve an 8- to 15-percent bandwidth gain - depending on whether a change in MODCOD is necessary. Both methods offer a significant improvement in bandwidth allocation compared with the 20- to 35-percent roll-off provided by the DVB-S2 standard, thereby dramatically lowering a users operational costs. The 5-percent roll-off feature complements WORK Microwaves entire modem portfolio.
Frequency Converter Portfolio
Fifth-Generation Frequency Converter Series
At AfricaCom 2012, WORK Microwave will demonstrate new enhancements to its next-generation Frequency Converter Series, which is geared toward applications that require low phase noise, ranging from S-band to Ka-band. The lower phase noise exceeds the recommended industry standard according to Intelsats IESS-308/309 phase noise specification by far. Based on a powerful new synthesizer, WORK Microwave Ku-band converters can now achieve a phase noise level better than -65dBc/Hz at 10Hz and -97dBc/Hz at 10kHz, while Ka-band converters can achieve phase noise levels better than -58dBc/Hz at 10Hz and -91dBc/Hz at 10kHz.
In addition to improved phase noise levels, the fifth-generation Frequency Converter Series also includes several important new features important to its flexibility and usability. A USB port, which can be accessed via the back panel, enables users to make a copy of the parameter settings and clone selected configurations to another device or save them for reference later. Also, a powerful, easy-to-use, and intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) supports easier access to all additional new features. With the implementation of the new USB port and enhanced GUI, installation of firmware updates is greatly simplified for the user. The Frequency Converter Series is highly scalable, customizable, and completely modular-based, providing users with a cost-effective solution that can be tailored according to their specific needs, including frequency range, output power, and conversion gain.
