PNYA's Post Break Offers Advice to Indie Filmmakers on Navigating Post

The free video conference is slated for Thursday, May 20th at 4:00 p.m. EDT, and a follow-up networking event has been scheduled for May 27th.

In the next edition of Post Break, the free webinar series from Post New York Alliance (PNYA), a panel of production and post-production experts will offer advice to independent filmmakers on how to finish their projects on time, on budget and without compromising their creative vision. The session, titled Small Budgets, Big Imaginations Post for Indie Films, is scheduled for Thursday, May 20th at 4:00 p.m. EDT on Zoom.

PNYA will conduct a follow-up Post Break event focused on connecting independent filmmakers with New York post-production companies and professionals on Thursday, May 27th at 4:00 p.m. (EDT).

Independent films face special challenges in post-production. Budgets are tight, workflows and delivery requirements are complex, and filmmakers may be new to aspects of the process. A panel of pros, drawn from production and post, will reveal how they approach planning, budgeting, funding and other aspects of post. They'll share the challenges they've overcome (including working through the pandemic) and the victories they've enjoyed in bringing films with limited cash, but lots of imagination, across the finish line.

Panelists

Jane Schoenbrun (they/she) is a non-binary filmmaker whose first narrative feature We're All Going to the World's Fair premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. It will be released in theaters by Utopia Pictures and available for streaming via HBO Max. Jane was co-creator of the touring variety series The Eyeslicer and the Radical Film Fair, a film flea market and mentorship event that drew thousands of attendees. They/she directed the feature documentary A Self-Induced Hallucination, produced Aaron Schimberg's Chained for Life, executive produced season one of Terence Nance's Random Acts of Flyness (HBO), and created the omnibus dream film collective:unconscious. She writes Filmmaker Magazine's Continue Watching column, served as senior film lead at Kickstarter and as Associate Director of Programming at IFP.

Maya Mumma, ACE, edited the Academy Award-winning documentary O.J.: Made in America for which she won Emmy, ACE and LA Film Critics Association awards. She began her career in the edit room of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Restrepo, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Her other credits include Which Way Is the Front Line From Here, Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley, Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown and A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers. Her most recent projects are the Emmy Award-winning King in the Wilderness and the Emmy and Peabody award-winning True Justice: Bryan Stevenson's Fight for Equality.

Sal Malfitano is Senior Colorist at Nice Shoes where he indulges his lifelong passion for beautiful images. Drawing on his interest in aesthetic trends in color imagery, and the science behind them, he works with filmmakers to perfect cinematic imagery, His many credits include Drunk Bus, the indie hit Heaven Knows What, Lovesong and Showtime's Prison Fighters: Five Rounds To Freedom. He has also delivered music videos for The Strokes, The National and Lady Gaga, as well as ad campaigns for IBM, Sherwin Williams, Tiffany, Ford, Verizon, and Reebok.

Moderator

Caryn Coleman is a New York-based film programmer whose work is focused on gender parity in independent film. She's the founder of The Future of Film is Female, an organization that amplifies the work of all women filmmakers through a short film fund, commitment to exhibition, and community building programs, that is also an ongoing screening series at the Museum of Modern Art. A longtime programmer at Nitehawk Cinema, she is the Director of the annual Nitehawk Shorts Festival and previously served as the group's Director of Programming/Special Projects. Coleman received the 2012 Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Art Writers Initiative Grant and has organized panels for the Art House Convergence, Nightstream, Athena Film Festival, Connective Conversations for the Ford Foundation and CAA.
