Master of Light, Jason Lanier, overpowers the sun using the Anova PRO 2

Some shoots really test the limits not only of your creativity, but also of your gear. Master of Light, Jason Lanier's, recent shoot on an abandoned lightship on the River Thames was one of these shoots; presenting both Jason and the Anova PRO 2 with numerous challenges to overcome.

When I was contacted by Rotolight about this shoot, I told them I wanted to take the Anova PRO 2 somewhere it would actually be a challenge, says Jason. Shooting on a hot, bright day in May with the Rotolight Anova PRO 2 as the key light, Jason needed to compete with the sun to be able to achieve soft, even lighting without overexposing the scene.

The Anova PRO 2 delivers an outstanding 10,700 lux output at 3ft; meaning that Jason could overpower the sun even on a bright day to create natural highlights and shadows on his model's face. The goal of light isn't to blast it so hard you completely obliterate any shadows and highlights you'll overexpose parts of her face, Jason explains. With the Anova PRO 2, the fact that you have hundreds of tiny little bulbs, the light is inherently going to be soft and dispersed so you don't need any modifiers either. Jason found that this was particularly the case when filming inside the glass cabin that housed the ship's light where space was limited and the sun heated the room like a greenhouse.

The entirely cool-running LEDs of the Anova PRO 2 meant that the lights weren't further heating room, and the naturally soft output meant that there wasn't any additional setup needed to get the results Jason wanted. I love light modifiers, but trying to shoot in here with a 36 to 48 inch modifier? There's just not the room to do it, Jason says. To come in here with just the Anova PRO 2 unmodified and get soft results with it is great it gives me a lot more options when I'm shooting.
