Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela has announced that Nickelodeon Africa has launched a full run of SpongeBob SquarePants in isiZulu. This is after the channel tested interest in the isiZulu-dubbed version in July this year.

ZULU SPONGEBOB APPROVED Mphela added that Nickelodeon Africa will launch the full run of SpongeBob SquarePants in isiZulu from 5 December on NickToons DStv channel 308.

TshisaLIVE reported back in July that the move was to celebrate the show's 36th birthday this year.

We are thrilled to present the premiere of the first SpongeBob SquarePants episode in isiZulu. This is a first in Africa. This provides audiences the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the iconic world of Bikini Bottom like never before.

This is one of the many steps we are taking in our commitment to being more inclusive and more localised while celebrating Africa's rich and colourful heritage and local languages, said Dillon Khan, senior vice president of Nickelodeon Africa.

Remember they are testing markets and looking at putting money behind profitable moves. Isizulu is the widely spoken language in South Africa. The success of the isiZulu dubbed version may open doors for other languages in the future. It's the first step. Let's welcome it.
