During a time of war, it's essential that journalists are prepared for any eventuality, however unlikely.
With that in mind, Thomson Foundation has responded by designing a unique new course to advise local and regional journalists in Ukraine in the event of a nuclear incident, be it accidental or targeted. Safety advice: Nuclear incident' is an easy to access course designed to take just 10 minutes on a smartphone. It's accessible via the encrypted messaging service Telegram and was created with help from two nuclear weapons experts. The experts are Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former commander of NATO's Rapid Reaction CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) Battalion who now advises journalists through the International News Safety Institute and Gareth Davies, a former soldier with over 20 years of CBRN experience including developing British and NATO policy and command of detection systems and their crews on operations.
Their advice includes a downloadable form containing a five-point safety guide.

In the confusion and terror of the battlefield it is important to have basic survival training and information and this is especially important in the unlikely event of a nuclear attack or accident, says Hamish de Bretton-Gordon.
It's the second course designed by Thomson Foundation for Telegram for local journalists in Ukraine. The first, Reacting to a chemical attack' was released earlier this year.
Thomson Foundation editorial associate, Catherine Mackie who worked on the course, said, This course is not suggesting that a nuclear incident is inevitable, imminent or likely. It aims to provide a useful reference point for Ukrainian journalists in particular those who may not have access to specialist kit or help from international news organisations. Making sure those journalists have easy access to clear, concise, expert advice is essential.
The course is available only on smartphones via Telegram. It is in both Ukrainian and English.
