Toshiba to Supply Gas Insulated Switchgears and Transformers for the Republic of Iraq

TOKYO Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that Toshiba Transmission and Distribution Systems Gulf S.P.C. (TTDG), a wholly owned subsidiary, has finalized the contract with Toyota Tsusho Corporation, one of Japan's major trading companies, to supply Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Transformers to the Ministry of Electricity (MoE) of the Republic of Iraq. This will be the first time Toshiba has supplied substation equipment to the MoE since the Gulf War.

Toshiba will manufacture and supply 400kV GIS, 132kV GIS and 400kV-250MVA Transformers, with its shipping scheduled to start in the fiscal year of 2018. Toshiba Transmission and Distribution Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd., a key manufacturing base for Toshiba's transmission and distribution (T&D) business, will manufacture 132kV GIS. These GIS and Transformers will be installed in four substations of MoE that will be constructed in south-east Iraq.

While economic reconstruction from the Gulf War remains the Iraqi government's primary concern, including consolidating the power network, Iraq still faces a chronic electricity shortage, especially in urban areas. MoE plans to construct 400kV class substations in over twenty sites, and provide a transmission network from power plants in south-east of Baghdad, the capital by 2020.

GIS, one of the main equipment of this contract, realize the minimization of the size of substations, as such, the demand growth is expected in urban area with increasing property values. Also, as it is installed inside the building, it can be constructed in seafront areas where the sea wind result to have a corrosive effect, and thus, helps to reduce operation and maintenance cost.

Toshiba is focusing its transmission and distribution business on emerging countries in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, India and Africa, all of which are expected to see drastic demand growth. Going forward, Toshiba will expand its business globally by offering reliable and high performance equipment.
