Sony Professional Solutions Europe has released a new report looking at the future of the media and broadcasting industries as they emerge from the pandemic shutdown, shifted consumer values and a technological boom.

The report, compiled by The Future Laboratory, identifies the emerging trends that are shaping the industry, inspiring all-new capabilities and enabling the creation of a new extra-ordinary', rather than a new normal, said Sony.

It looked at the social, cultural and technological forces shaping the future of the industry, examining the emergence of hybrid media and broadcasting, accelerated decentralisation, the streamlining impact of digital transformation and the adoption of new holistic and collaborative approaches to sustainability.

The report identified four key areas for success to ensure businesses position themselves at the forefront of the industry shift:

Embracing hybridity as the future, ensuring software and hardware work together seamlessly to enable the smooth running of operations for both producers and consumers

Empowering next-gen creatives with the tools needed for success - from providing accessible tools to boosting the unique cultures of grassroots organisations

Utilising the unprecedented capabilities of next-wave production, creating streamlined workflows that embrace the fluidity and flexibility of digital

Embedding sustainable practices into every aspect of production, collaborating across the industry to ensure impactful pledges are prioritised

Martin Raymond, co-founder of The Future Laboratory, said the accelerated change is a watershed moment: While a degree of turbulence is likely to continue in the years to come, the innovation spurred by the pandemic is now enabling media and broadcasting to thrive once again, with digital transformation, mindset shifts and new behaviours transforming what the industry is capable of.
