OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 16.11.2016. Dr. Hermann Gerlinger, Member of the Executive Board and since 1999 Head of the Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology business group (SMT), is retiring on 31 December 2016 after a total of 32 years of successful work at ZEISS. Dr. Hermann Gerlinger has been a member of the Executive Board of Carl Zeiss AG since 2006. He will continue to act in an advisory capacity in major strategic projects for the Executive Board and the SMT Management Board. Moreover, alongside ZEISS President and CEO Dr. Michael Kaschke, he will sit on the newly founded SMT Advisory Committee in which the Dutch partner ASML also will be represented.
The physicist, who obtained his PhD from the University of W rzburg, joined ZEISS as a project manager for spectroscopy in 1984 and later became Head of the Optical Process Metrology area. In 1993 Dr. Hermann Gerlinger transferred to the SMT business group where he initially worked as a project manager in the Lithography Optics division. After holding several management positions in development and production, he became Head of the SMT business group in 1999. In 2006 he was appointed to the Executive Board of the ZEISS Group, in which, in addition to his responsibility for SMT, Dr. Hermann Gerlinger was most recently responsible for the areas Corporate Research and Technology, Corporate Security and for the Korea and Taiwan regions.
We are extremely glad and grateful that Hermann Gerlinger was a great leader on the Executive Board for many years. With a pioneering spirit, but always with both feet firmly on the ground, he expanded the companys technology leadership in the semiconductor area and played a decisive role in shaping the innovation culture at ZEISS. On behalf of the Supervisory Board, we extend our gratitude to him and are pleased that he will maintain his links with the company, said Dr. Dieter Kurz, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Carl Zeiss AG.
In this role Hermann Gerlinger made a key contribution to the strategy and success of the entire company and played a decisive part in the successful development of the SMT business group into the technology and market leader. Without Hermann Gerlinger, ZEISS would not be the worlds leading photonics player it now is, said President and CEO Dr. Michael Kaschke. He adds: Together with our partners, he and his team have achieved the leading position in lithography for semiconductor chips first and foremost with immersion lithography. In addition, together with his team, he drove forward the use of EUV technology in semiconductor production. We thank Hermann Gerlinger for his many years of extremely committed and successful work and extend our very best wishes to him for his future.
The SMT business group has been following a constant growth trajectory for several years now and is therefore one of the most successful business groups at ZEISS. Most recently, with the agreement on the joint ongoing development and acceleration of the future-oriented technology High-NA EUV and the associated intensification of the extremely successful partnership with the Dutch company ASML, an important step was taken for the future of the business group.
After 32 years at ZEISS, including 23 years in the SMT business group, which he headed for 17 years, and more than ten years on the Executive Board, 63-year-old Dr. Hermann Gerlinger is handing over his responsibilities to his successor.
For me, this is the ideal time to hand over the baton to my successor. I am pleased that I have helped to move ZEISS forward for the past three decades and that I will maintain my links with and support the company in the future, says Dr. Hermann Gerlinger.
Dr. Karl Lamprecht Becomes New Head of the Business Group
The Executive Board of Carl Zeiss AG has decided to appoint Dr. Karl Lamprecht as Head of the SMT business group, effective 1 January 2017. In this role he will report to the ZEISS President and CEO, Dr. Michael Kaschke. In its meeting of 15 November 2016 the Supervisory Board of Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH appointed Dr. Karl Lamprecht as a further member of the SMT Management Board, with immediate effect.
After earning his doctorate in physics at the Institute for Experimental Physics of the University of Innsbruck and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Chicago (USA), Dr. Karl Lamprecht was a consultant and technology investor at McKinsey & Company, Inc. and AdAstra Venture Consult GmbH from 1995 to 2005. In 2005 he joined the SMT business group as Head of Strategic Business Development. Three years later he became Managing Director of the former company Carl Zeiss Laser Optics GmbH. From 2015, the 51-year-old was entrusted with the leadership of SMTs largest and most important business unit, Semiconductor Manufacturing Optics, and in this position he was also responsible for looking after OEM customers.
In the past 11 years Karl Lamprecht has achieved a lot for ZEISS. We are pleased that Karl Lamprecht, an experienced ZEISS Manager with an in-depth knowledge of the semiconductor business, will now take on this challenging task in the SMT business group. We wish Karl Lamprecht much success in his new role, adds Dr. Michael Kaschke.
