Ahmed Kathrada in the spotlight --

Political prisoner and apartheid revolutionist Ahmed Kathrada stands against a wall of words that carried him through 26 years of incarceration.

Kathrada featured as the eighth icon on 21 Icons South Africa on SABC3 and made headlines this week when he spoke at the launch of the second trailer of Anant Singh s new movie, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

The revolutionary Kathrada was arrested while collaborating with the African National Congress (ANC) alongside Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu. He spent 18 years of his life sentence on Robben Island.

Confined behind bars, he found that secretly writing down inspiring quotes and words provided a mental escape from his circumstances and a way to cement his faith in the cause.

Since his release, Kathrada has become a living archive of experience and was regarded as a key figure in unravelling stories of friendship, determination and hardship for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

Kathrada has formed The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and continues promoting the values of the South African constitution, campaigning against racism and oppression.
