How the Small L3Harris ICN Overcomes Big SWaP Challenges

It's hard to imagine life today without a phone close by that's able to immediately do all of the everyday things people need to do on demand. Instant access to the internet, a camera on-hand to capture key moments, apps to order takeaways in minutes, and a whole world of online shopping is all available at our fingertips from one single, pocket-sized system. This ease of access and use in mind, it's surprising that the same approach hasn't really been adopted within a defence capacity.

Even in today's increasingly progressive modern battlefield, the restrictions posed by traditional, stove-piped electronic warfare (EW) hardware continue to cause substantial size, weight and power (SWaP) related challenges that impact mission success. Due to the siloed nature of these systems, multiple pieces of EW equipment are often required to achieve multiple tasks during a single mission. This is not an ideal scenario for missions that require several EW capabilities at once; for example, one piece of kit may only be able to provide force protection to safeguard soldiers while another piece of kit may only enable electronic surveillance to detect and locate adversarial signals. Together, all of this equipment adds up to a considerable physical, power-hungry, burden which could be resolved by simply employing the benefits made possible by multirole EW systems.
