The NFVF calls for writers to develop feature film concepts on the Sediba Masters Screenwriting Training Programme

The National Film & Video Foundation is offering FREE part-time training opportunities to writers who wish to be trained as professional screenwriters as well as develop their feature film concepts.

This programme is pitched at master's level and is aimed at writers and script editors/development executives who have foundational experience and knowledge of the principles of moving image storytelling. Writers selected will be those who are able to demonstrate a level of understanding of the fine balance between craft, creativity, marketability and originality that indicates that they are ready to work with development personnel at a high level of capability and deliver a cinematic 3rd draft script and selling document that will lead to interest for further development and potential production.

The successful candidates will subsequently go through an intensive Sediba Masters Screenwriter's Training Programme where they will be required to team up with a trainee script editor in developing concepts which are engaging & have wide audience appeal. This part-time training programme runs for 12 months, comprising of one workshop per month held during weekends. Workshops will be held in Johannesburg. Travel & accommodation for those based outside of the Gauteng Province will be arranged & paid for by the NFVF.

Criteria for Selection for Candidates:

Must be SA citizens or have permanent residency or have refugee status

Must be over 21 years of age

Must have either:

been commissioned to write scripts for TV dramas or have produced or directed a TV drama series

written, produced or directed an award-winning short film

had a feature film previously produced but which was not successful theatrically

completed the Sediba Spark' programme or another recognised screenwriting programme

Have an original voice

Presumed audience, whether for the art house or mainstream, should be clear

Pass the cultural test for South African films or could be attractive options for co-production with one of our co-production treaty countries

Demonstrate that they are used to exercising personal responsibility and taking initiative when circumstances require

Good communication and organisation skills

Have a good degree of self-confidence while being able to take criticism constructively

Enjoy engaging in collaborative relationships

Be available to attend the five day Concept Development Workshop. Dates will be communicated in due course.
