What the latest Matter update means for smart home technology interoperability and functionality

21 February 2025 In the rapidly evolving world of smart home technology, Matter has emerged as a manufacturer-independent standard, revolutionising how devices from different brands communicate and operate seamlessly together. This open-source protocol ensures that smart home devices, regardless of the manufacturer, can work harmoniously, providing consumers with a more integrated and user-friendly experience.

Our commitment to Matter We've been an integral part of Matter certification since the inception of Matter 1.0. As pioneers in this certification process, we've helped develop and implement the standard. We hosted the Matter 1.0 and Matter 1.2 Specification Validation Events (SVE), finding them valuable opportunities to share our leading knowledge and experience with others and learn from them in turn. In addition, we were one of the first accredited Authorised Test Laboratories (ATL), driving the certification process forward.

Looking ahead, we'll be joining the Matter 1.4.1 SVE (Specification Validation Event) to help further advance the Matter standard.

What's new in Matter 1.4 With each new release, Matter expands its coverage. Matter 1.4 is the latest iteration of the standard and continues to push the boundaries of interoperability and functionality. It now encompasses everything from lights and thermostats to dishwashers and security systems.

This continuous expansion ensures that new smart home devices can be easily integrated into the Matter ecosystem as they develop. Matter 1.4 is no exception, introducing several significant enhancements and new features. These include expanded capabilities in energy management with support for devices such as solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and water heaters.

Beyond this, Matter 1.4 delivers enhancements so home routers and access points can act as both Wi-Fi access points and Thread border routers, ensuring a more reliable network infrastructure for Matter-compatible devices. The update also includes enhanced multi-admin support, improving the ability of multiple administrators to manage and control smart home devices, making it easier for households with multiple users to share control and access.
