I finally went to see World War Z this past weekend. It's a tribute to my busy life this summer that I waited so long after it came out to see it. Now I'm first and foremost a vampire kind of person but zombies run a close second. Vampires and zombies are sort of two sides of the same coin. They are both undead but where vampires are crafty and you need to be clever to avoid them, zombies are mindless and you just need to not get caught.
And of course there are zombies and then there are zombies. The classic zombie is shuffling, slow and inevitable. Some of the more modern zombies are much faster. Personally, this takes away a lot of the real core of a zombie for me. Zombies are slow - you can outrun them easily - but they just never give up. The minute you let your guard down, you find yourself trapped or surrounded and it's all over. It also takes time to turn into a zombie - more than a few minutes. Time for you to realize you are doomed and fully feel the fear. World War Z zombies are fast and they turn in seconds. But other than that they are very similar to a more classic zombie.
And now on to a few thoughts about the way World War Z ended and what they could do for a sequel. I'm not going to reveal lots of the movie but I will be talking about the ending so SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT! Stop reading now if you don't want to hear details about how the movie ends.
So clearly when the movie ends it is not the end of the story. The humans had found a way to hold off the zombies but they were still out there and still a threat. So what do you do with a few million zombies? You can go around and kill them one by one, but that seems a waste of potential good resources. Now there have been many suggestions on what to do with classic zombies (like the top 10 list) but the WWZ zombies won't work out so well for classic zombie uses. Here are some new ideas.
These WWZ zombies are energetic! And they love to eat. There are a number of uses they could be put to if they could be trained to eat things other than healthy live humans. For starters, they could replace garbage disposals for houses with septic systems that can't handle a garbage disposal. Just chain one in the back yard to keep them from wandering off and toss your table scraps to them. Sure, a family dog can help with some table scraps but some things that are not healthy or even safe for a dog (like chicken bones) can be safely thrown to a zombie. If a chicken bone gets stuck in a zombie's throat - no big deal, they're already dead!
The WWZ zombies were attracted to noise. People talking in libraries, which are supposed to be quiet places, has always been a problem. Traditionally, one of the librarian's jobs has been to glare at the offender with a severe expression and go Shhhhh! . Turn a zombie loose in a library and anyone who talks gets bitten. After a few people get made examples of you better believe that will be the end of the noise problem in libraries!
Zombies can be used in the workplace too. Confidential documents need to be safely disposed of and currently most companies use a shredding service like the one provided by Iron Mountain. You drop papers into the slot on the top of a shred bin. When the bin gets full, they come take it away and shred the paper. If the zombies could be trained to eat paper you could just lock a zombie inside of the shred bin and when people drop paper in the zombie would chomp them up. Not noisy like a shredder, doesn't need electricity, and never wears out (as far as we know). The only down side might be the noise from the zombie banging around inside the bin but from what we saw in the movie they get pretty quiet when they are not actively looking for lunch.
With a little imagination the possibilities are endless. These are just a few ideas on how to turn a problem like zombies into an actual asset. What other uses can you think of?
