Over 40 per cent of Germans imagine watching TV exclusively via the internet in the future, according to the Zattoo TV Streaming Report 2019.

More than 54 per cent of German streaming users cited the ability to decide when and where to watch their favourite shows as the biggest benefit of OTT, while more than 44 per cent cited availability across multiple devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and smart TVs.

Meanwhile, more than 63 per cent of streaming users prefer to use the media libraries of TV channels over YouTube (59 per cent) or VoD services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime (41 per cent). However, 95 per cent of under-20s prefer to watch TV content on YouTube.

The report also found that laptops and PCs are the most popular devices for streaming in Germany (53 per cent), followed by smart TVs (47 per cent) and smartphones (29 per cent).

This year's report shows that the potential of the TV streaming market is far from exhausted, said J rg Meyer, chief content and consumer officer at Zattoo. There has been much debate over the past few months about the growing popularity of Netflix and the market entry of Disney+ and Apple TV+. Time-shifted television is becoming increasingly important and the trend is clearly moving to non-linear content. This is also reflected in the strong growth of US corporations.
