American Cinematographer to be Honored with IMAGO Award

The International Federation of Cinematographers (IMAGO) will present American Cinematographer with an award for Extraordinary Contribution to the Art of Cinematography at the 3rd IMAGO International Awards for Cinematography, held on March 14 in Brussels, Belgium.

According to IMAGO: The American Cinematographer magazine has been a guide and a testament for cinematographers around the world for generations. It informs, inspires and educates, which is why we are proud to recognize American Cinematographer magazine with the 2020 IMAGO International Award for Extraordinary Contribution to the Art of Cinematography.

American Cinematographer was launched in November of 1920 as a four-page newsletter. You can read it yourself here.

In an email sent to the magazine, IMAGO president Paul Ren Roestad noted, Honoring American Cinematographer is a great pleasure for me personally. The magazine has been one of my inspirations since I was a young boy.

This award comes during American Cinematographer's centennial year, as it celebrates 100 years of excellence in showcasing the art and craft of cinematography as well as some of the best practitioners of the profession.

The operations of American Cinematographer are overseen by the Publications Committee, with Christopher Chomyn, ASC serving as chair. Operations are also presided over by Society CEO Terry McCarthy.

The American Society of Cinematographers appreciates IMAGO for recognizing the stature our magazine has earned over the years as it has inspired generation after generation of filmmakers, says Chomyn. The ASC is proud to have reached this milestone of publishing. In this centennial of our treasured magazine, we are able to reflect back through our pages to trace our journey from the beginnings of our industry through today. We recognize the enduring influence American Cinematographer magazine has on cinematographers around the world. Visual storytellers everywhere rely on American Cinematographer as a window into the work of others who share our passion and commitment to the craft of cinematography. We are proud to continue the tradition our founding members started 100 years ago, and we look forward to discovering in our pages what the next 100 years will reveal.

AC is currently preparing a searchable online digital library of every issue published since 1920.

Stephen Pizzello serves as editor-in-chief and publisher. David E. Williams serves as web director and associate publisher. The editorial team comprises Andrew Fish (senior editor), Christopher Probst, ASC (technical editor), Jay Holben (Shot Craft editor), Mat Newman (web producer) and Samantha Dillard (digital content creator). Art and design is by creative director Marion Kramer.

A digital edition of AC is also currently published in Chinese with the help of the web site Hello Cine, and currently reaches more than 80,000 subscribers.

AC s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) reach more than 400,000 followers.

This past year, the ASC formally became a member of IMAGO, announced by President Kees van Oostrum, ASC at the Camerimage festival on Poland.
