Spring may have begun in March, but for many cultures it's the first of May that marks the real appearance of the warmer months. As Guinevere sang in Lerner and Loewe's classic musical Camelot, it's that time of year when all the world is brimming with fun wholesome or un.' Celebrated in ancient Rome as the festival of the goddess of flowers, Flora or hundreds of miles away in Gaelic nations as the holiday Beltane May Day has long been a time to relish the burgeoning seasonal sunshine and give thanks that winter has finally made it's retreat.

Of course, these days May Day usually has a much more secular meaning for those looking for festivities, we observe the holiday with the giving of May baskets overflowing with flowers, the crowning of a May Queen, and (of course) by skipping around the maypole. Really, it's all just an excuse to frolic in the sun preferably with a flower crown.
