10-11-2013 SGL Group Lecture Theater Opened at AGH University of Science and Technology Krakow Further step towards joint International Carbon Center

Wiesbaden/Krakow, October 11, 2013. SGL Group and AGH University of Science and Technology Krakow are systematically working towards establishing their planned International Carbon Center . Today, right on time at the start of the new academic year, a lecture theater in the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics, modernized with the support of SGL Group, was handed over to AGH. At the opening ceremony, Dr Hubert J ger, Chief Officer Technology & Innovation SGL Group, and Professor Tadeusz S omka, Rector of AGH gave the inaugural lectures.

Dr J ger said: Through our cooperation with the internationally renowned AGH University of Science and Technology Krakow, we are receiving valuable scientific support in the development of synthetic graphite products and processes. By engaging in this cooperation, we also want to play our part in ensuring that the next generation of scientists obtains the best possible education and training.

Prof Tadeusz S omka said: The highest priorities of the AGH University of Science and Technology are research for industry, further cooperation in the field of education and investment in labs and education infrastructure. The mutual cooperation between SGL Group and AGH serves as a model example of partnerships between universities and industry.

For his great commitment to the cooperation between AGH Krakow and SGL Group, Dr Hubert J ger was presented with the Faculty's highest award, the Keramos .

The opening of this lecture theater is part of the agreement to establish an International Carbon Center signed by the two partners in September 2012. In a further step, SGL Group is to set up a carbon laboratory at the University. Through regular series of lectures on the subject of Industrial Carbon and endowed scholarships for scientific work, SGL Group has been promoting the practical training of future engineers and scientists since 2011. The work carried out by the young scientists for their master's and doctoral theses was supervised by SGL Group's Central Research Department. The best three master's students received job offers from SGL Carbon Polska.

Within SGL Group's global production network, the Polish sites at Racib rz and Nowy S cz set the benchmark for quality and efficiency in graphite production. At Nowy S cz, SGL Group produces cathodes, furnace linings, carbon electrodes, and industrial graphite materials, e.g. anode material for lithium ion batteries. Racib rz supplies furnace linings to some of the largest blast furnace projects in the world.
