SBS Appoints Head of Commissioning

SBS has appointed Alison Sharman to the new position of Head of Commissioning.
Sharman has over 20 years' experience as an executive with major public and commercial broadcasters in the UK.
Since 2006, Sharman was Director of Factual and Daytime for ITV, leading the transformation of the daytime schedule and restoring ITV's factual reputation by attracting some of the best filmmakers and producers in the UK to the channel.
Sharman's media career began in the UK at the BBC, where she became Controller of BBC Daytime in 2002 responsible for BBC1 and BBC2 daytime. During this period BBC Daytime was the market leader and grew audiences to both channels. Sharman commissioned a range of content across the portfolio, including MasterChef, Eggheads and The Afternoon Play
Sharman also held the position of Controller of Children's where she oversaw the running of two channels: CBBC and CBeebies and a production team of over 500. Sharman commissioned In the Night Garden and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
At ITV Sharman commissioned a range of award-winning content, fronted by celebrities such as Billy Connolly and Joanna Lumley and brought to the channel popular formats such as Long Lost Family and Britain's Secret Treasures, as well as landmark documentaries 9/11 The Day That Changed the World, HMP Aylesbury, Strangeways and Our Queen.
SBS Director of Television and Online Content Tony Iffland said: Sharman joins SBS at an exciting time as we seek to build on our reputation for telling diverse Australian stories through impactful content that pushes the boundaries and gets people talking.
Having a dedicated Head of Commissioning as part of the SBS team will be an important part of meeting the challenge of entertaining audiences across our platforms with innovative and thought-provoking local content in a competitive and fragmenting media market.
On her appointment Sharman said: I am delighted to be joining SBS and look forward to this exciting and challenging opportunity. My ambition is to build on SBS's success and grow its reputation for being one of the world's most unique and diverse broadcasters.
Sharman will be responsible for driving the Commissioning strategies for SBS ONE and SBS 2, and will start with SBS in August.
