Is reborn digital radio in Europe? Broadcasters and automakers have put in common in the WorldDMB European Automotive Event, held in Brussels, their impressions of the time living the digital radio in Europe.

Coinciding with the WorldDMB European Automotive Event, held in Brussels on Wednesday promoted by the Consortium WorldDMBcar manufacturers and broadcasters have in common their impressions of the time living the digital radio in Europe and the role of the automotive industry in its development.

Although the digital radio in Europe seemed to have stagnated over the last six months experienced a series of events that seem to revive the possibility of a migration. Norway has been the country that has announced a migration to digital in 2017, followed by Switzerland that will do so in 2020-2024.

In Germany, the public ARD chains has shown a firm commitment to long-term for DAB and the BMVI, Federal Ministry of transport and Digital infrastructure, has established a Committee that will ensure the process.

The support of the Government of the United Kingdom has meant a greater extension of DAB coverage in road around the country, being also provided a second multiplex in 2016.

Denmark has announced a new roadmap for the digital radio DAB . The Netherlands will continue to also deploying new multiplex regional.

In Italy and Poland coverage continues to increase, while the French regulator has begun a consultation on the second wave of cities that adopted digital radio, after Paris, nice and Marseille.

Digital radio coverage levels are approaching the FM, with coverage of 99% of the population in Norway and Switzerland, 95% in Denmark, United Kingdom and Netherlands, 91% in Germany and 68% in Italy.

Patrick Hannon, President of WorldDMB, said in Brussels that "digital radio has reached a turning point in Europe. The first countries have confirmed the dates of conversion to the digital system and the political commitment to digital radio is catching on in many markets. Digital radio offers significant benefits to drivers. The technology is a proven fact. Now it is the time for car manufacturers take advantage of this opportunity".

For his part, Dietrich Schirm, director of ICT at Bavaria, stressed that "Germany has shown strong support for digital radio. Our broadcasters and automakers are working on what will be a successful experience for drivers. "Will ensure a transition smoothly to digital which will benefit the industries of automotive and German broadcasting, as well as recent political support to digital radio users themselves".

The Brussels Conference has been initiated with the Flemish Minister of culture, Sven Gatz, igniting the first multiplex commercial DAB in Belgium. "Digital radio brings even better audio quality, more space and capacity and reduces the environmental impact of radio", it said.

Broadcasters urged the European Commission to ensure the maintenance of the spectrum for the provision of digital radio with the conviction that the band III should continue to be the band dedicated to digital radio in Europe. The event was attended by a number of officials in the Commission and in the year of the WRC-15 focus on keeping the radio spectrum for radio was a commonality in the presentations of the various speakers.

The Conference was attended by 200 professionals of the sector and the cde automotive industry some 20 countries.
