ZEISS will be demonstrating a new affordable VR FPV system featuring its award-winning ZEISS VR ONE virtual reality headset at the upcoming International Drone Expo (IDE), December 11-12, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
During IDE, ZEISS will be showing the ZEISS VR ONE with newly available mobile FPV apps tested as an FPV system to work with popular DJI Drones and the ZEISS VR ONE. These systems allow drone pilots and aerial videographers to use the ZEISS VR ONE headset to pilot drones with an immersive pilots-eye view, and control on-board gimbal-mounted cameras in an accurate, natural way through head-tracking.
The ZEISS VR ONE recommended FPV apps are compatible with popular drones from DJI including: DJI Phantom 2 Vision, Vision Plus, Phantom 3 Advance, Phantom 3 Professional, and Inspire 1.
The FPV app gives a drone pilot or passenger a point-of-view of the live video stream from the drone's camera, along with telemetry from the drone on the smartphone displayed as a split-screen image optimized for VR viewing. When the smartphone is inserted into the ZEISS VR ONE with its precision smartphone tray, the headset displays an immersive image with approximately a 100 degree field-of-view.
The ZEISS VR ONE with the FPV app displays aircraft telemetry with the video stream, providing navigational information as well as an augmented reality, see-through mode to simplify drone take-off and landing. Its head-tracking feature allows easy control of gimbal mounted cameras by simply turning your head for hands-free camera control while the pilot operates the drone remote controls.
"This new system gives pilots a new level of remote flying control displaying an immersive view as if the pilot is on-board, flying the drone" explains ZEISS VR ONE Product Manager Franz Troppenhagen. "Plus, the head-tracking feature is a great tool to accurately frame shots and naturally move the camera to get the best results."
The ZEISS VR ONE is available now as are the apps. The CloudlightFPV app for iOS devices is available for $9.99 USD from the Apple App Store and the Litchi App for Android devices is available for $9.99 USD from Google Play. Current iOS devices compatible with the ZEISS VR ONE are the Apple iPhone 6 and 6S smartphones and Android devices are the Samsung Galaxy S5 and S6.
As with all ZEISS products, the user gets the very best optics, ergonomics and picture quality with the ZEISS VR ONE. The advanced, high-performance optical design and precision lenses deliver a razor sharp picture throughout the field of view. The wide IPD range means that adjustments for user IPD eye-to-eye distance are un-necessary. Also, the ZEISS VR ONE is designed so users can wear their own glasses, giving the best personalized visual experience with no need for diopter adjustments.
The ZEISS VR ONE Virtual Reality Headset can be purchased from ZEISS online, and is also available on Amazon, B&H Camera, Brookstone and Adorama with an MSRP of $120 USD. Smartphone trays for the ZEISS VR ONE have an MSRP of $9.90 USD for several popular smartphones or available as a free downloadable CAD file from ZEISS for 3D printing of other smartphones or developing your own tray using a special base tray CAD file.
