RESEARCH REVEALS TOP TEN KIDS FILMS WATCHED BY ADULTS

Disney's high-octane animation Cars 2 has been revealed as the nation's favourite film for big kids following research to reveal the most popular children's films being watched by adults once the little ones have gone to bed.

The research, carried out by film and TV streaming service Amazon's LOVEFiLM, examined streaming data to reveal the top ten films being viewed after the traditional 9pm kids' bedtime, with the automobile adventure featuring the voices of Owen Wilson and Michael Caine claiming pole position. The film follows car personalities Lightning McQueen and Mater as they head to the World Grand Prix race getting caught up in an espionage plot along the way.

Quirky adventure story and two-time Oscar-winner Up, which tells the tale of a pensioner who flies his house to the wilds of South America using hundreds of helium balloons, is second in the chart. It seems that adults too are charmed by the story of an eight-year-old stowaway and a talking dog taming a bad-tempered old man as they journey to exotic lands in a flying house.

Ratatouille, the Oscar-winning tale of a rat with big dreams of becoming a chef, also cooked up a storm with older viewers. Big kids tuned in to see the little blue rodent rise from the sewers to the kitchen, putting the savoury stray at number three in the chart.

Heart-warming animation Wall-E rolls into number four, with the story of a clever robot who discovers a way to save the world years after all the humans have gone appealing to the older generations.

Fifth in the list is the prank-filled documentation of two brothers being forced to bond by their elders. Diary of a Wimpy kid: Rodrick Rules has the parents hooked as well as the kids.

The cheeky, poker-playing twins played by a young Lindsay Lohan in 90s favourite The Parent Trap, reeled in a substantial number of older viewers placing the film at number six in the chart. This funny yet touching tale of a broken family forced back together when estranged twins meet and switch places at summer camp also stars Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson, and has evidently become a classic for children and adults alike.

Next up is Sky High, which follows young Will Stronghold as he tries to find a balance between being a normal kid and a superhero. Perhaps hitting a nerve with parents trying to find a work-life balance, the extraordinary film flies into number seven.

Eighth in the list is retro favourite The Smurfs. This modern, CGI action-packed adventure based on the 1980s television series seems to be striking the right note with adults, making the little blue creatures a firm favourite.

It's the franchise that turned Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens into stars: High School Musical 3: Senior Year comes in at number nine. The catchy tunes and cheesy mass dancing seems to be the perfect antidote to a long week for TV fans.

In tenth and final place in the chart is the cautionary tale of a rich, vain Emperor reduced to a lowly llama in a botched assassination plot. The Emperor's New Groove, a film about learning to live at the bottom and featuring a stand-out soundtrack by Sting, pulled in a decent amount of big kid viewers to secure a place in the top ten.
