Conor McNally Co-presents European Commission Presidential Debate

30 April 2014: RT news2days Conor McNally has been chosen as co-presenter for European Commission Presidential Debate broadcast to over 30 countries

RT News' Conor McNally has been chosen as the co-presenter of a major European Commission Presidential debate due to be televised by the European Broadcasting Union on Thursday 15th May 2014.

Conor will present segments during the programme, showing the online conversation around the debate and giving Europe's voters a chance to shape the discussion. Viewers will have the chance to make their voice heard by using the hashtag #TellEUROPE.

The debate produced by EUROVISION will be shown by more than 30 international broadcasters, including the BBC in the UK, ORF in Austria, RAI in Italy, TVE in Spain and RTP Portugal. It will be conducted in English, with simultaneous interpretation into 23 languages.

The EUROVISION DEBATE will be broadcast live from the European Parliament on May 15th at 21h00 CET(8.00pm Irish time). RT will be broadcasting the debate live on RT News Now.

Under the Lisbon Treaty, the president of the European Commission must be chosen taking into account the result of the European Parliament Elections. The Eurovision Debate will see Martin Schulz of the Socialists, Jean-Claude Juncker of the EPP, Guy Verhofstadt of Liberals and Democrats, Ska Keller of the Greens and Alexis Tsipras of the European Left face 90 minutes of questions on their vision for the future of the EU.

Most of us use social media to share our opinions, but now those ideas and questions can help shape the debate on the future of the EU. In particular, this event will give people of my generation a chance to present their views in the way they feel most comfortable at the touch of their fingers. For me personally, it's an exciting adventure which will bring me right to the heart of European democracy and as a young journalist that is a very appealing prospect.

Conor McNally is 23 years old and a native of Carlow town. Before joining the RT news2day team he worked as a news journalist at KCLR96fm and graduated top of his class from the journalism degree course in Dublin City University. Conor started his journalism career at the age of 15 when he began writing monthly features for a classic car magazine, despite being unable to drive!
