Water restrictions implemented after Pretoria residents failed to use water sparingly

City of Tshwane confirmed earlier today that daily water usage exceeded the allowed limit as per the City's water licence and that reservoir supplies are low in Kosmosdal, Rooihuiskraal, Thaba Tshwane, Blair, Athol, and Ga-Rankuwa Industrial sites.

Other areas feeling the brunt include Kruisfontein, Brakfointein, Mabonane, Akasia Park, City Centre, Pretoria West, Sunnyside, Meintjieskop, Wonderboom, Saulsville, and Erasmia.

City of Tshwane pleaded with the community and business owners to conserve water. If residents cooperate, water-related interruptions will be minimised, the department said on Twitter. Residents are also told to refrain from watering gardens between 6:00 and 18:00.

Users are urged to use grey water for flushing toilets and water gardens and to install water-saving devices such as low-flow showerheads, tap aerators, dual-flush toilet cisterns, etc. When cleaning the driveway, use a broom instead of hosepipe, and collect rainwater in a bucket for gardening or washing the car.

Taking a shower conserves more water than taking a bath and regularly checking toilets or taps for leaks will reduce water usage as well.

News of the water restrictions didn't go down well Residents are up in arms over the water restrictions. While many understand the need to use sparingly water - and comply - they feel that the City of Tshwane takes too long to repair bursts pipes and leaks. A Twitter user known only as Kalahari Gem shared a video clip of burst pipe.

He said that the matter was reported on Friday already. After his complaint was escalated twice, he was informed that the pipe and meter will be repaired on Monday. It's still not fixed.

Another user, Gaopalelwe K Ditinti, said: You have the audacity to tell residents to conserve water, but almost everyday people tag you to inform you about leaking and burst pipes gushing gallons of water on the daily, marete a lona man!

Colleen Bowie said on Facebook that the council keeps on approving new dwellings [in Rooihuiskraal] but does not upgrade the infrastructure so [the] reservoir cannot cope with the number of people it has to service, while Niel Maritz reported a water leak three weeks ago, with no feedback from the City of Tshwane.
