Frankenstein' Sightings Grip Hollywood With Halloween Weekend Lightning Drone Storms

Sightings of Frankenstein were reported in Hollywood over Halloween weekend timed to a series of larger-than-life lightning storms that terrified delighted locals and visitors.

Lightning first struck October 30 at the famed Hollywood Forever Cemetery, when a 1,500-drone lightning storm electrified the night, spelling out the 650-feet-long title treatment for Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro's new adaptation of the Mary Shelley classic, debuting on Netflix November 7.

The weather took an even more electric turn on October 31, aka Halloween, when a (seemingly) real lightning storm lit up the sky above local landmarks like The Roosevelt hotel and the Capitol Records building. The storm was later confirmed to be a series of six coordinated drone shows that combined cutting-edge technology with advanced projection mapping to create a synchronized weather event unlike anything Hollywood has ever seen. Presented by Netflix to herald Frankenstein's long-awaited return to the city that made him immortal in so many films, this stunt marked the first-ever integrated drone and projection mapping sequence in Hollywood.

The drone shows culminated at the TCL Chinese Theater during a sold-out IMAX screening of the new Netflix film. In addition to a prime view of the lightning strike, attendees received a custom Frankenstein popcorn bucket, a limited edition poster and a commemorative ticket. With a dress code of "Let us be monsters together," many fans came dressed as their favorite del Toro creations. The screening was followed by a Q&A with del Toro and Academy Award -nominated director Jason Reitman.

Fans in New York City have also reported lightning sightings at Tiffany & Co.'s Fifth Avenue flagship, The Landmark. Tiffany & Co. collaborated with del Toro on a special installation entitled Awaken Love: A Cinematic Window Experience. Each of the store's five windows, framed by the architectural design of Victor Frankenstein's laboratory window, reimagines pivotal scenes from the film. See more information here.
