Mirai Media Elevates Digital and Broadcast Productions with Blackmagic Design

Studio uses Ultimatte 12 HD and Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro for realistic, cinematic multiplatform content.

Blackmagic Design today announced that Chile based indie television studio Mirai Media uses Ultimatte 12 HD real time compositing processor and three Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro digital film cameras to produce a number of variety shows, including El Show de Las Javis and M s Terapia Que Tarde, available on digital and social media platforms as well as Chile's national free to air television network, TV+. The shows initially grew their audiences online and later expanded their distribution to broadcast, all while maintaining the same production workflow and visual standards.

Based in Santiago, Mirai Media was founded in 2024 by Benjam n Ferrer and Rodrigo Orellana with the goal of creating high quality digital content that bridges the gap between social media production and traditional television standards. Today, the company operates with a team of six professionals with backgrounds in film, television, and digital media production. This combination of creative and technical expertise allows Mirai Media to manage the entire production pipeline, from development and studio production to post production and distribution.

Ferrer explained, One of the defining aspects of Mirai Media is our focus on elevating the visual standard of digital content, moving beyond traditional podcast style formats and applying more cinematic production techniques. As we began building our team, we brought in professionals who had experience working with Blackmagic Design equipment. Their familiarity with the gear made it a natural choice for us to incorporate into our workflow.

Relying on a complete Blackmagic Design workflow, Mirai Media produces El Show de Las Javis, M s Terapia Que Tarde, and Golfistas An nimos in its own studio and later deliver these to TV+ for broadcast in addition to its online distribution. Mirai Media also produces El Hor scopo de la Buena Onda, designed primarily as short form digital content distributed through social platforms such as Instagram and YouTube.

The workflow for all our shows is very similar as we use three Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pros for a multicamera set up, feeding into an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2 live production switcher for switching and live to tape recording. The main difference in the production lies in the visual design and pacing of the programs. For example, M s Terapia Que Tarde' is more conversational and focused on interviews and discussions, while El Show de Las Javis' has a more entertainment driven format with a slightly more dynamic visual environment, and Golfistas An nimos' sometimes incorporates outdoor scenes as it's more focused on golfing, Ferrer explained. For the visual environment on all shows, we use a green screen combined with an Ultimatte 12 HD, allowing us to composite the talent into virtual sets created in Unreal Engine. This setup gives us the flexibility to design different environments depending on the program while maintaining a consistent visual quality.

He continued, We selected the Ultimatte 12 HD because having a clean and realistic chroma key was essential for the visual standard we wanted to achieve. Our productions rely heavily on virtual environments, so we needed a keying solution that could deliver consistent and natural results.

Ferrer notes that one of the main benefits of the Ultimatte 12 HD is the quality and precision of the key, especially around fine details such as hair, edges, and lighting transitions. For them, this is extremely important for maintaining a believable image when compositing with virtual backgrounds. Another major advantage when using Ultimatte 12 HD is its speed and reliability as it allows Mirai Media to achieve a high quality key quickly, which keeps the production process efficient and reduces the amount of correction needed later in post production with DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Before implementing this workflow, achieving consistent chroma key results could be more time consuming and less predictable. Ultimatte 12 HD helped us solve this by providing a stable and professional grade keying solution, which is especially valuable when working in a compact studio environment, Ferrer commented. One of our favorite aspects of the Ultimatte 12 HD is how naturally it also integrates with the rest of the Blackmagic Design ecosystem, particularly when combined with our cameras and post production tools. This integration allows us to maintain a smooth pipeline from capture through compositing and final delivery.

Ferrer added, One of the main benefits of using the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pros while shooting in Blackmagic RAW is the image quality and color science. The cameras allow us to capture a very detailed image with strong dynamic range, which is especially important when working with green screen and compositing environments using Ultimatte 12 HD and Unreal Engine. The cameras are also perfect for our studio space as they're compact and have flexible rigging options.

Ferrer also noted that many of the clips to promote the shows are distributed through social media platforms, so being able to frame and capture images with the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pros that adapt well to both horizontal and vertical formats is essential. The high resolution of the 6K sensor gives Mirai Media the flexibility to reframe for vertical formats without sacrificing image quality.
