Grab yourself a cuppa and step into the lives of our lovely employees at Object Matrix first up is Peter Watling, Global Head of Cloud Sales:
How long have you been with Object Matrix? It's difficult to remember that far back I mean about 5 and a half years
What does your job entail? It may be quicker to say what it doesn't entail.
I manage all sales activities in EMEA with a focus on specific territories and where we have a presence. Retaining and growing our fantastic customer base is as important as welcoming new MatrixStore customers on-prem and cloud. This is both direct and indirect with a lot of help from the fantastic team at OM.
I also drive the rapidly increasing MatrixStore Cloud sales which are currently deployed in Europe and South Africa.
The lack of travel adds to the challenge but something we have sadly become used to recently.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? Travel (unless my wife is reading this). It's a small industry and relationships are so important that it is good for many aspects of the business to be able to meet with our customers, prospects, partners and colleagues in person. And whatever the topic of discussion, it is much easier over a lovely lunch . And I look forward to doing more business in the Maldives!
What is your proudest moment at Object Matrix? Our 15 year anniversary on the boat in Amsterdam at IBC with the welsh choir singing as we sailed through the canals in the city and gaining the attention of every passerby. I am not Welsh but the whole evening was extremely moving, even our English contribution.
Tell us about a life experience that has influenced the way you approach work? I am a cyclist and live in South Wales, which is rather hilly and to be a strong fast rider there are no shortcuts, therefore come rain or shine you train and train and train, relentlessly.
This is very relevant to sales in a way, the relentless pursuit to achieve and to win and this is very much my ethos, persistence and hard work pay off in the end, but it's not an easy journey.
Describe Object Matrix in 3 words! Individual, entertaining, inventive
Or generally what it is like for me at OM - friends and family
What was your first job? Forgetting the job where I was sentenced to what I would only be described as torture each weekend at the age of 15 (approx) by sweeping up the aisles in a tomato nursery that was over 50 degrees celsius (for the benefit of our US friends) whilst being repeatedly stung by wasps and all for the vast sum of £2 per hour, £10 per day! Not forgetting the paper round I had from the age of 11. We lived in the country, therefore a distance from the nearest village. I had a 3 mile cycle every morning to collect the papers, a hilly 2 mile paper round and then 3 miles back. This was all before school, 7 days a week, come rain or shine, for the grand sum of £8 a week!
My first real job was in a local hotel as a part-time waiter. I then went on to train as a chef and discovered my passion for food.
What are your top 3 life highlights? Watching my 3 boys being born.
What is on your bucket list? To cycle around the world, climb Everest and build my own house.
What's your secret talent no one knows about? Aside from being a top chef, an expert at sales, a TV personality and an almost pro-level road rider, I can't think of anything. Oh, maybe that I have a great singing voice
