Egypt: ales wins the first section of the ambitious modernisation programme for the main line network

Cairo, 26 May 2013 Thales has signed with the Egyptian National Railways a contract valued at a consolidated amount of over 109 million for the modernisation of the signalling systems on the Cairo-Alexandria corridor. The signature ceremony took place in the presence of His Excellency Dr Eng. Hicham Qandil, Prime Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Dr Eng. Hatem Abdel Latif, Minister of Transport of the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Mr Nicolas Galey, Ambassador of France and His Excellency Mr Fidel Sendagorta, Ambassador of Spain.

The Cairo-Alexandria railway line is approximately 208 km long and is currently the busiest section of the Egyptian Railways network, carrying more than 25 million passengers per year.

Thales signed a turnkey contract including design, supply, construction, phasing, commissioning and maintenance services. It covers the modernisation of the signalling as well as the telecommunication system and the centralised traffic control. The Thales signalling solution will enhance the safety and the capacity of the line, allowing an expected 32 million passengers to use it every year. The speeds of the trains will increase from 140 km/h to 160 km/h, the headways between trains will decrease from 10 to 5 minutes. The construction will take 4 years.

This major main line award confirms Thales's worldwide leadership in the Transport Systems business with the capacity to both deliver greenfield projects and upgrade existing infrastructures with minimum service disruptions for optimised performance and safety. Thales has key references around the world such as the North-South Railway line in Saudi Arabia, the Spains high-speed rail network, the Danish rail network, etc. Following the successful implementation of Fare Collection and Communications systems for the Cairo metro, this award reinforces Thales's footprint in Egypt.
