KCETLinks Val Zavala Honored with Community Service Award Presented by the Mexican American Bar Foundation

BURBANK, CA - June 3, 2014 - KCETLink, the national independent public transmedia organization, is pleased to announce that Val Zavala, Vice President of News and Public Affairs and executive producer and anchor of the award-winning news program, SOCAL CONNECTED, will be honored for her community service by the Mexican American Bar Foundation at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel on June 14, 2014.

Val brings us news stories that teach us about each other and ourselves -- stories about our local politics, local business, community activism and democratic issues, said Angela Robledo Gart, Chair of the Mexican American Bar Foundation Gala Dinner Committee. Both Val and KCET challenge viewers to think critically and actively participate in shaping our community, rather than being passive bystanders. In addition, she is an outstanding role model for young Latinos who strive to make a meaningful contribution to our city, and to the world. We are proud to honor her dedication and service to Los Angeles.

Zavala will receive the Mexican American Bar Foundations 2014 Community Service Award for her commitment to the Los Angeles community. She has worked at KCET since 1987, playing a vital role in the long-running newsmagazine, LIFE & TIMES, as well as other news programs and specials. Her work has earned her 16 L.A. Area Emmys, eight Golden Mikes and numerous L.A. Press Club awards.

For more than two decades, Zavala has covered major issues impacting Southern California politics, education, healthcare, environment, demographics, and arts and culture. In addition to this years Mexican American Bar Foundation Award, Val has been honored by numerous community organizations including the California Chicano News Media Association and Hispanic Americans for Fairness in Media for integrity and longevity in the field of television journalism.
