The fourth annual Jozi Film Festival (JFF) takes place from Thursday, 19 to Sunday, 22 February and will host the premiere the Canadian film, Mommy, as part of the lineup of eight films that will be screened.
A number of worthy submissions have been received that reflect a multi-genre slate of films from South Africa, USA, Namibia, Cyprus, India and Spain, to name a few. Watching these wonderful films on the big screen with the full cinema experience, is the best way to view them. Bookings are now open, and can be made online at www.cinemanouveau.co.za or via the SK App. Standard ticket rates apply, and loyalty points and discounts are applicable for members of SK Club, Discovery Vitality and Edgars Club.
The official launch of the Jozi Film Festival at Cinema Nouveau takes place at 20:00 on Saturday, 21 February, with the premiere of Mommy, a multi award-winning film and Canada's Best Foreign Language Film submission to the 2014 Academy Awards. Since it is #OscarBuzz season, and the announcement of the 2015 Oscar winners takes place from the USA on Sunday, 22 February, this is a deserving title.
The film stars Anne Dorval as Diane Despr s, a widowed mother who is overwhelmed by the difficulty of raising her troubled, sometimes violent son Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon) as a single parent. Despr s then begins to receive assistance and support from her mysterious new neighbour, Kyla (Suzanne Cl ment).
Directed by Xavier Dolan, the film has won multiple awards worldwide. Mommy will enjoy a wider cinematic release later in 2015.
Other films to be screened at Cinema Nouveau include: Love the One You Love (Saturday, 21 Feb at 14:15), directed by Jenna Cato Bass. This film was first screened at the 2014 Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) and won Best South African Feature Film, Best Direction in a South African Feature Film and Best Actress (Chi Mhende). Love the One You Love marks the directorial debut of Bass who, together with the cast, will be in attendance for this screening.
Despite the film's screening at DIFF, the JFF organisers believe it is an important South African film and one that Johannesburg audiences should experience too, hence its selection. The film is unique in its style and narrative and lead actress Chi Mhende is compelling as Terri, a sex-line operator in a relationship with Sandile (Andile Nebulane). The two seem to have it all but viewers watch as things disintegrate between them.
Another South African film to be featured at JFF is The Two of Us/Thina Sobabili (on Saturday, 21 Feb at 11:45), directed by Ernest Nkosi and starring Busisiwe Mtshali, Emmanuel Nkosinathi Gweva and Thato Dhladla among others. Thulas will do anything to protect his sister Zanele after witnessing her abuse as a child. As a result, the two have a very strained relationship. Zanele falls for the charms of an older man and Thulas is determined to put an end to this relationship, a decision that will cost Thulas everything and prove to his sister how much he really loves her.
The closing film at Cinema Nouveau is a feature-length documentary from the UK called Garnet's Gold (on Sunday, 22 February at 16:15). Directed by Ed Perkins, the film tells the moving story of Garnet Frost as viewers journey into the mind of a man searching for meaning: a search with which one can all empathise. This is a film about dreams, inspiration and the resonating power of hope.
