Duplex - a dialogue. The duplex cable format allows for a dialogue, as opposed to the monologue provided by the simplex. Two strands of fiber are employed. The obvious analogy here is a telephone line, on which both parties are permitted simultaneous communication.
The duplex's downside relates to speed and facility of adding more devices. Duplex cables only permit two devices to communicate at the same time, demanding enhanced connections to accommodate more devices.
